Republicans seek unified bid to topple Burns as Senate leader
Republican senators in California pursue a single candidate to oust Democrat Hugh Burns who has led the Senate since 1957. After 112 hours of closed caucus and the swearing in of John A. Nejedly the group vows to vote Wednesday to choose a pro tempore but admits no candidate has full backing. Some see a coalition with dissident Democrats as possible if 15 to 18 GOP members unite, while Gov. Reagan presses for a Republican leader.
