Six hundred dollars in cash prizes will be given to float entries in the 17th Annual Lompoc Valley Flower Festival Parade on June 28. Nearly one thousand dollars in trophies will also be awarded. Information booklets and entry blanks for the 1969 parade are available.

Cemetery plan endorsed by local groups for national cemetery
The American G I Forum Veterans of World War I Bar racks, Ladies Auxiliary WW I Veterans, American Legion Lompoc Post 211 and the Lompoc City Employees Association unanimously backed establishing a national cemetery at Vandenberg Air Force Base. No new national cemeteries are planned currently. California sites are at capacity.

YMCA Camp Rally Opens 1969 Season At Local Center
YMCA invites last year’s campers parents and friends to a get acquainted rally Friday April 11 at 7 p.m. Director Gene Doud says the event offers song fellowship and registration for two Lake Sequoia sessions August 2-9 and August 9-16. Peanuts sales support camper funding with over 100 participants raising more than 6000 last year.

Mutiny trial at Fort Ord opens under tight security
At Fort Ord California the court martial of 14 soldiers charged with mutiny opened with armed guards road blocks and helicopter overhead. Defence counsel called security stricter than in Vietnam as 27 defendants faced charges from a sit-in at the Presidio stockade.

Marine defect from U S Marines to Communist side in Vietnam
The Hanoi News Agency reported John F. Lowney a 19 year old private first class of the 3rd Battalion 9th Regiment of the U S 3rd Marine Division defected to the Communist side in South Vietnam on February 22. He said he opposed the Vietnam War calling it the dirtiest in U S history and criticized Washington leaders for sending many American troops into combat. State cigarette tax apportionment totals 7.48 million

Seven-Time Hero Officer Hazards Gunfire to Nab Robbery Suspect
San Francisco officer Frank Kerlin a decorated veteran disarmed a robbery suspect after gunfire shattered his motorcycle windshield and jacket. He cornered one suspect in Golden Gate Park after a chase through Haight Ashbury and Head Start, seizing a .38 revolver and the paper bag with $87. The second suspect escaped as Crilly, 24, of Brookfield Wis., was arrested on armed robbery and assault charges.
