County crops reach all time high value in 1968 report

Agriculture in Santa Barbara County set a new 1968 record with total production valued at $90,295,460 up from $88,016,920 in 1967. Vegetable crops led with $23,610,400 from 27,263 acres, while fruit and nut crops rose to $16,040,500 and the cut flower sector jumped to $4,599,000 from 716 acres.

Reform plan to cut property and income taxes in combat

A San Diego three judge panel hears a lawsuit seeking to stop California from withholding 25 percent of Federal Public Law 874 aid from military dependent districts including Lompoc Unified. The suit names State Public Instruction Director Max Rafferty and other officials. Santa Barbara officials expect a ruling in a few days.

Youth arrested after attack on sheriff deputy in Lompoc

A 19 year old from Lompoc was jailed on battery on a peace officer charge after a scuffle at the Lompoc Police Station. Deputy William Harris, 32, was cut on the lip in the incident near the rear station door. An 18 year old accomplice was booked on a drunkenness charge. Bolinger posted 1285 bail and was held at Lompoc Jail.

Tiger rides in truck with llamas to Royan Zoo

Zookeeper Jean Marcade put a tiger in his truck with two llamas during a return trip from Paris to Royan Zoo. The tiger killed one llama and rode in the cab, later devouring the other llama before being caged. Marcade suffered a nervous crisis and is recovering at home.

Teague to Visit Lompoc for Flood Damage Tour

Congressman Charles M. Teague will visit Lompoc on Wednesday during Easter break to view flood damaged areas from the Jan. 25 and Feb. 25 floods. He will fly in from Ojai by Air Force helicopter, tour the lower valley, inspect temporary bridges, and join a lunch with local officials before returning home.

Texan recounts Mexican prison escape and near execution

Texan Dykes A Simmons Jr. says guards at Nuevo Leon Penitentiary forced him to escape under threat of death. He described being assaulted during the attempted exit on December 8, 1960, and said he disguised as a woman to flee, later flown to Los Angeles with his attorney.

Rain storms last Saturday halted releases from Lake Cachuma. Releases resumed Saturday evening at about 900 cfs, lowering Cachuma Lake about one foot below full level to allow six days of dam repairs during a zero release window starting April 14 at 6 p.m.

Two escape injuries as Highway 1 wrecks occur

An Airman from Vandenberg AFB and a Playa Del Rey woman escaped injuries after separate Highway 1 rollovers. Susanne Akins 21 lost control south of Lompoc in a small foreign car at 3 30 a m drifting onto the shoulder and overturning. Airman J C Mark Randolph 22 north of Jalama Road at 4 a m lost control and the pickup rolled onto its top. Both vehicles sustained moderate damage.
