Fighting rages in East Pakistan as evacuations proceed

Reports say combat continued in several East Pakistan areas while Washington and other governments plan evacuations. The U S embassy in Bangkok announced a C130 flight would carry Americans out but evacuation was later postponed to Saturday. BBC urged British nationals to reach Dacca for evacuation and Australia prepared partial evacuees. PTI Reuters correspondent sighted American Sabre jets bombing Brahmanbaria near the border.

Reserve officers graduate from Allan Hancock College academy

Twenty six reserve officers from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties completed a 19 week Allan Hancock College Reserve Officers Academy. The ceremony featured Superior Court Judge William Clark as speaker and Paul Fitzpatrick as valedictorian receiving a special plaque from the Santa Maria Community Club.

Santa Barbara TB Group Reports 63,264.63 Seals Funds

Christmas Seals contributions through March 31 total 63,264.63 with Mrs. Elynor Cunningham reporting at the quarterly Santa Barbara County TB and Health Association board meeting. The 1971-72 budget remains similar to last year as Dr. J. Fred Halterman chairs the treasury. Delegates for the annual meeting in Los Angeles include Mrs. Cunningham and Dr. Donal F. Sweeney with Mrs. Arthur Tognazzini of Santa Maria as alternate. A dinner is planned April 29 at the UCSB Faculty Club featuring guest speaker Dr. Arie Jan Haagen-Smit.

Cabrillo student among top finalists in Bank of America awards

Four high school seniors reached zone finals for a chance at a 1000 top prize in the Bank of America Achievement Awards. Cabrillo’s Ernest Day joins peers Jane Hysen of San Luis Obispo High, Gayle Sarawatari of Arroyo Grande High, and Peter Lambert of Arroyo Grande High as finalists in fine arts liberal arts vocational arts and science and math.

Promising 1971 Pacific Conservatory season announced

The Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts unveils a notable 1971 lineup led by director Donovan Marley. Season tickets cap at 1 000 center seats to widen access, with five major plays including Cabaret Electra Hamlet Hotel Paradiso and a then unnamed musical. The season runs July 8 to August 2 with 54 repertory performances in 47 days.

Goleta Townhouse Project Nears Full Capacity

The Goleta Valley Housing Committee reports 74 of 75 subsidized townhouses on Kellogg Ave north of Hollister Ave are occupied. Housing manager David Rahaim notes 300 residents, mostly needy families, with three exceptions for local handicaps. The five acre project began last January after a county survey found widespread sub standard housing.

Cold front drives storms across nation with record winds

A powerful cold front moved through the midwest to the East Coast bringing 40 degree drops in the plains and snow in Wisconsin. Gusts reached 47 mph in Minnesota while 6 inches fell in Nicollet County. Tornadoes struck Mississippis Collings area, and Alabama Mississippi rail weather caused widespread damage. Temperatures ranged from 12 degrees in International Falls to 72 in Key West as showers, thunder, and winds affected several states.
