UPI reports March unemployment at 6 percent with 5.2 million jobless, a rise from February. Employment held steady at 78.5 million and average weekly earnings climbed as hours increased.
Lt. William L. Calley Jr. returned to his Fort Benning bachelor apartment under military house arrest after a presidential order released him from the Army stockade. The 27 year old, sentenced to life for the My Lai killings, faced ongoing appeals as his status shifted.
Maj. Gen. Talbott orders Calley confined to quarters on the base with one uniformed guard at night. Two armed MPs patrol the sidewalk and a rear area for his protection as about 200 well wishers crowd the front yard. Calley may move freely on base but cannot give interviews or statements.
In Washington the Senate passed a public works bill by 62 to 10 with only eight Republicans and two Democrats voting no. The measure could put about 150,000 unemployed people back to work soon as it advances revenue sharing.
Police seek a short plump young woman seen leaving a Los Angeles city hall rest room moments before Thursday’s bomb explosion.
