Voters Eye Chicago School Referendum and Jail Bond
The Independent Voters of Illinois back the Chicago public schools referendum and a 9 million dollar county jail bond to be voted on with the June 11 primary. They estimate a 15 cent per 100 assessed valuation hike would raise 15.6 million annually. Gardner urged voting in favor, citing overcrowded and unsanitary jail facilities and the need for rehabilitation. The group also endorsed Abner Mikva for Congress, Alderman William Cousins Jr and Dr Quentin D Young as Democratic National Convention delegates.
