City CCC Likely Votes Tonight on 47th Place in Hyde Park Renewal

The Conservation Community Council may approve adding 47th Place to the Hyde Park Kenwood urban renewal plan. The Hyde Park Neighborhood Club hosts the 7:30 meeting as debate centers on land use, building code compliance, and a proposed HR 1 site expansion.

CCC seeks report on 47th Place buildings and relocation plan

The CCC asks for a current condition report and a relocation plan to allow residents to stay if demolition occurs. At the April meeting four members reported on a tour of 47th Place and urged rehabilitation options. Chairman Edwin Rothschild said DUR staff reports should be ready for tonight's meeting and any new input would be heard before a vote. If not finished, another meeting will be held within a week.

The Chicago Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference considers four choices for 47th Place. Options include adding land to the HR1 site for a Lake Village Associates high rise and townhouses, splitting land with Ancona School, rehabilitating existing buildings, or seeking rehabilitation without demolition. Community members stress residents’ needs and relocation conditions.

Redeemer Church Sold Likely To Become Youth Center

The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer at 56th and Blackstone, merged with St. Paul’s, will be sold and renamed Church of St. Paul and the Redeemer. Approval by the bishop and standing committee is needed, with possible use as a community center discussed alongside ongoing youth programs and support from Rev Spencer Parsons and Street Worker Michael Ford.

St Thomas Denies Race Problem In Classrooms

The pastor of St Thomas the Apostle Church states a teacher student clash at the church school was not racial. A nun left the third grade after ongoing friction. a new teacher is now assigned. The school serves 47th to 60th streets and nearby areas with about 60 percent Negro students. About 80 percent of high school students live in Woodlawn North Kenwood Oakland and nearby communities.
