Iowa Republicans adopt forward platform after floor fight
At the Iowa GOP state convention in Des Moines delegates approved what was called a forward looking platform. An amendment removing a plank for governor appointment of three elected officials passed 2 191 to 1 272, and a late addition urged a return to June primary elections. Republican leaders praised the platform as progressive. Richard C Turner of Council Bluffs announced a bid for attorney general, joining Joseph Bertrode and Virgil Moore. Jack Peters withdrew from the governor race, supporting the primary winner. Peters said funding and party establishment made winning unlikely. Peters placed third in a straw vote.
