The editor notes election-year politics after state conventions for Democrats and Republicans and jokes about travel and weather. He mentions a plan to release the July 6 issue a week early, then take a brief break for fishing, and comments on national debt and workload.
Archery lessons as part of the summer recreation program are held each Wednesday at 1 PM at the elementary school. If transportation is needed, call Mrs. Vern Gard for a ride.
A representative of the Social Security Administration District office in Waterloo will be in Allison at the Court House on July 6, 20 and 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Earl T. Johnson, District Manager, said. Persons may call the Waterloo district office in room 702 of the Black Hawk Building at 234-1554.
Three rain events in June dropped over 8 inches on Greene and surrounding areas. The first about 3.7 inches hit June 11 and 12, followed by 3.1 inches on June 25, with 1 to 1.5 inches reported later. Creeks ran bank full and some overflowed lowlands while the Shell Rock River rose but stayed in banks.
Ella Swant 82 formerly Ella Courtney of Greene died Sunday June 19 in Webster South Dakota Survivors include two daughters two sons and many nieces and nephews in Greene and vicinity Funeral services were held in Webster on Wednesday June 22
Pvt. James E. Kiefer finished basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri then spent a 14 day furlough with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Kiefer in Maryland. He is now in mechanics school at Aberdeen Proving Grounds with the new address RA 16862462 USA OC S 9th ETC Class 31 Maryland. During leave he joined his parents at Gun Lake in Aitkin Minnesota for a short fishing trip.
Greene will host the high school summer sectional baseball tournament with games on Wednesday July 6 and Saturday July 9. Allison-Bristow meets Dumont at 6:30 and Hampton faces Plainfield at 8:00 Wednesday evening. Saturday sees Rockford versus the Hampton-Plainfield winner at 6:30 and Greene against the Allison-Dumont winner at 8:00. Semis are at Thornton Monday July 11 at 6:30 and 8:00. Finals July 13 at Thornton at 8:00.
The Butler Soil Conservation District sponsors the seventh Iowa Queen of Conservation contest with state, regional groups. Open to single farm girls ages 16 to 21 residing in Butler County, entries due by July 15 1966. District finalists crowned July 20 in Allison and two winners advance to regional competition.
Walter Epley of New Hartford is named a Soil Scientist with the Soil Conservation Service and assigned to the Allison office. Len Olmstead of Clarksville and Joanne Rieman of Allison also join the county SCS for summer training.
The Greene Commercial Club will give away Greene Bucks totaling 90.00 next Saturday evening at 8 45. Three first prizes of 20.00 each, two second prizes of 10.00 each, and two third prizes of 5.00 each will be awarded. No winners last Saturday due to stormy weather.
A series of special meetings will run at Calvary Baptist Church in Greene from Wednesday July 6 through Friday July 15. Evangelist Russell Farrell of Ankeny will speak each evening at 8 00 p m Rev Farrell previously led Adelphi Calvary Baptist Church at Runnells and First Baptist Church at Monroe before dedicating himself to evangelism. He is described as a gifted speaker presenting God’s Word plainly. The public is invited to attend.
A dance will be held at the Country Club on Saturday evening July 2. The board of directors serves on the committee. Music will be supplied by Karl Schwenneker and his combo. All members and guests are welcome to attend.
Here From Nigeria Mr and Mrs Leroy V Kingery are visiting in the home of their parents Mr and Mrs Orval Kingery and with other relatives in this area They arrived on Saturday night after teaching school two years in Kaduna Nigeria West Africa They will return to Nigeria by September 1 and will teach at Waka Nigeria for two years.
Greene High School Band directed by Ray Holtz displays its third outing in new uniforms since late May. Music Mothers raised over 5000 dollars in the Greene Community School district to fund about 9000 dollars for 100 uniforms as the band led the Daily Day parade on Saturday June 25.
Children interested in the Woman's Club summer recreation program are to meet at the fire station Wednesday July 6 at 9 a.m. Fire Chief Lowell Maxson will speak on Fire Safety. Mothers are asked to have the Thursday group attend the Wednesday morning safety lesson. there will be no craft lesson Thursday morning.
Greene residents Mr and Mrs Leland F Bachman and Mr and Mrs Verne Rounds hosted Governor and Mrs Jose Sering of Surigao del Norte in Des Moines and Onawa. The Bachmans son and Mrs Rounds daughter Lyle Bachman are Peace Corps volunteers in Surigao del Norte as Gov Sering tours the United States on a State Department program with ten other volunteers.
Roy Downing superintendent of waters urges parents to supervise children at beaches and in lakes and streams during the Fourth of July weekend. He warns against wading in unfamiliar waters and recommends life preservers and wading upstream to reduce risk from drops and underwater hazards.
Three Greene youths appeared with parents in Dean Wiesmann's Court at Allison on Thursday and pleaded guilty to Intent to Insure relating to motor vehicle laws. Each paid a 500 dollar fine and 84 dollars costs for allegedly throwing personal property belonging to Nicklaus Mahr from vehicles. Deputy Sheriff Marvin Barth filed the information. County authorities warn that Nick Mahr's property is personal property and may not be damaged or removed, or else prosecution will follow.
The Butler County Extension Council will again sponsor the Town Master Corn Growers Contest in Butler County this year. Kay Connelly says entries are due by July 80th with a $1000 fee. Contest area must be at least 10 acres harvested under sponsor supervision, weighed under state inspection, and adjusted to No 2 moisture. At least 1 percent of the ten acres will be weighed for moisture check. Information and entries available at the County Extension office in Allison.
The Little Leaguers won 9 to 6 and the Babe Ruth team won 11 to 4 over Nora Springs on Thursday evening. Greene's Little League jumped to a 6 to 0 lead in two innings with Potter tripling and Bryan Trees homering for the first two runs, plus multiple hits and walks. Nora Springs rallied with 3 runs in the 3rd and 5th, but the Ramblers held on 9 to 6 with key hits by Shultz and Landers and pitching by Trees and Eimers. The Babe Ruth squad scored early and often, adding runs through the 5th, while Eagles pitching prevented Rambler gains.
In Hospital Clark Moser was admitted to the Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital at Charles City on Thursday morning following a heart attack. Cards may be sent C/O Room 255. To date he is not allowed to have visitors.
Dennis Tack son of Harold and Mrs Tack earned Dean's List honors at the State College of Iowa Cedar Falls where he majors in mat and minors in biology and received a scholarship for another year for academic excellence.

Greene businesses will be closed all day Monday July 4 for Independence Day. The post office will also be closed and there will be no window service or rural route delivery that day. Mail will be dispatched and distributed as usual. Stores will remain open Saturday night until 9:00 PM.
Clair Starkweather was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Mason City for treatment on Tuesday afternoon.
Members of the Greene Commercial Club are to meet at City Hall in Greene this evening Wednesday at 8 00 o clock.
Marlys Ihde of Parkersburg was crowned Butler County Dairy Princess at Dairy Day in Greene. She, 22, is sponsored by the Parkersburg Jaycees and will represent Butler County in the Iowa Dairy Princess contest later this summer. Runner up is Kathy Chester of Plainfield, sponsored by Hysrade Food Products Inc. Last year's Princess Neva Krull and alternate Ann Schilling attended. A large parade and dairy bar drew a crowd with winners in three groups and a street talent program moving to the high school auditorium due to rain.
New residents Mr and Mrs Roger Martzahn welcomed a son Roger Joel born Wednesday June 22 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City weighing 8 pounds 4 ounces. Grandparents Roy and Mrs Martzahn of Greene and Richard O Connors of Rockwell. Another child Cheryl Anne born Sunday June 26 at the same hospital weighing 9 pounds 8 ounces. Grandparents Clifford Smith and Harry Eliasen with great grandmother Mrs William Eliasen.
The Greene Ramblers lost to St Ansgar 4 to 2 on Friday before beating Riceville 3 to 1 last night. Greene and Rockford are tied for first in the conference at 6 and 2. The Rams executed a rare triple play in the fifth inning of the St Ansgar game.
James Richard Eggena 18, son of Mrs. Gertrude Eggena of Greene, is home on 20 days leave after eight weeks of basic training at San Diego and two weeks at Camp Pendleton. He will report to Naval Air Station Memphis for aviation school training and then join a Marine aviation unit. Eggena enlisted in 1965 under a delay program and later the Aviation guarantee. He is a 1965 Greene High School graduate.
