Says Additional Water Is Needed

VALLEY CITY June 23(4) The lakes of North and South Dakota must be given additional water supplies or they will in time become unfit for fish size and waterfowl. O H Johnson SD game and fish commissioner warned at the Izaak Walton League convention that without annual flushing and diversion ditches water quality will decline like the Dead Sea. He urged utilizing runoff and building artificial lakes or impounding reservoirs to prevent future losses of migratory waterfowl and to preserve breeding sanctuaries and watering places.

The largest wool clip ever received at Selle Fourche was touched in by B E Lahd of Buffalo. Forty four bags weighing over 36 pounds each were sold to a Chicago company.

Oil Well Moody No 1 to be Spudded Near Belle Fourche

Hulls Belle Fourche June B- A wildcat oil well Moody No 1 will be spudded near the Montana South Dakota line north of Orla Moody’s residence on Slick Creek. Drilling equipment from Chanute Kansas will arrive this week and drilling to a depth of 7000 feet may occur. J H Voorhees Black Hills geologist will supervise with Moody structure 16 miles west of here being prepared.

Harvey Dunn Visits Old Home Community in De Smet

Noted artist Harvey Dunn and Mrs Dunn with their son Robert stop in De Smet on their way to Oregon, revisiting his prairie roots after attending the fiftieth Old Settlers’ Day in nearby Brookings where three of his paintings hang at the college. Dunn, raised south of Manchester, studied at State College before heading east to art school.

Wool Pooled For National Market In Pennington County

Two carloads of wool totaling 108700 pounds were shipped from Rapid City to the National Wool Marketing corporation in Boston. The Pennington County Wool Growers association pooled the 1921 season shipment. Agricultural agent Oscar Hermstad aided loading and noted advances on the shipment from 10 to 14 cents per pound.

Insurance merger to form new Des Moines Life and Annuity

Des Moines Life and Annuity will consolidate with Royal Union Life Insurance, forming a new company with 2 million dollars capital. Royal Union holds 1 million, Des Moines Life 600 thousand, and 408 thousand new shares are issued as a dividend to Royal Union holders. A. C. Tucker chairs the board. J. J. Shambaugh becomes president. Expansion plans for Huron are not yet defined, with changes anticipated in the summer.

Miss Teresa Brady was guest of honor at a shower hosted by Mrs. Ed Hottcher and Mrs. Arthur Tompkins at the Ed Bouicher home. Twelve ladies attended a delightful evening with rose, white and silver decor. A new business, Vic's Lunch, recently opened in Highmore in the building just north of the Legion hall on the west side of the Black and Yellow trail. Mr and Mrs W H Holtzman, former operators of the Marshall cafe, now run the establishment, which has been redecorated inside and out.

Creamery Association Set Meeting at De Smet

The local Farmers Creamery association will hold its semi annual stockholders and patrons meeting at the American Legion clubhouse in De Smet on Wednesday. Arthur Anderson reports cost cuts and higher patronage since two new cream routes were begun boosting butter output by 40092 pounds in the past year. Manager H L Boecker notes the creamery began with small capital and has built a strong financial standing with dividends to stockholders under current management.

Alleged Forger Held In Woonsocket Court

In Woonsocket on June 25 special report, sheriff M H Helgeland arrested Ralph Emerson of Stor Ja on forgery charges after Exascson found a blank check signed by Mrs Clara J Woods, filled for 125.95 to L E Lovejoy and endorsed to Emerson. Emerson’s preliminary hearing set him bound over to circuit court on 1000 bond. he plans to plead guilty when the state attorney returns.

Half an inch of rain fell Sunday night in Turton vicinity easing drought concerns for area farmers. Some hail reported with no damage. Corn growing well. most farmers cultivating a second time and expect knee high by the Fourth of July.

Narrow escape in Belle Fourche power wringer incident

In Belle Fourche on a Sunday night Mrs Jaraez Giannonatti and two others narrowly escaped serious injury when her hair became entangled in a power wringer. A portion of scalp the size of a silver dollar was torn away before help arrived and the power was shut off. An unrelated note states an oyster consumes about 1 gallon of water daily and filters 90 percent of food particles.

Washington knew of Hard Times after the Revolutionary War

Washington returned from the Revolutionary War nearly broke. George Washington sent his mother 15 guineas explaining they were all he had and due to others. He noted that T Rave demanded over 500 pounds, about 340 for the 1786 tax, and he did not know when funds would arrive.
