Lincoln's rise traced by a county editor's chance note

Champaign Illinois recounts how William Stoddard and Dr. John W. Scoges built the Lincoln Presidential boom. Stoddard, editor of the Central Illinois Gazette, met Lincoln in West Urbana in 1859 as Lincoln read a letter in a hotel lobby. Lincoln, then a lawyer, was not yet seen as a president. The chance encounter helped spark attention to Lincoln’s growing career and eventual rise to the presidency.
