Band Concert Moved To State Fair Grounds Tonight

The Har on Municipal Band concert shifts from J W Campbell park to the State Fair Grounds Brandstand at 7:45 PM as part of National Guard Day. Admission is free for most events with a small charge for the meal proceeds aiding the Company C summer encampment fund. The program includes vocal and instrumental numbers, a kittenball game, and a talk by Donald Marcellus on National Preparedness. The Huron National Guard unit will later attend Camp Ripley Minnesota for summer maneuvers.

Harvest Workers Sought by Huron Office for North Dakota Jobs

E R Seim director of the Huron district office of the South Dakota Employment Service says 50 harvest workers are to be recruited for North Dakota. About 200 workers are needed in South Dakota and hires will be sent to Fargo and Wahpeton at a starting wage of $2 per day. Interested men should contact Seim at the Lampe Market building in Huron immediately to fill the quota this week.

Lancastria Sinking Nabs 2823 Missing As Evacuation Ferry

London reports 2823 missing after the Lancastria liner was struck by bombs during the mid June evacuation from St Nazaire. About 5300 aboard included many women and children. Survivors were rescued by small craft ferrying troops to ships in the harbor.

Big Stone Lake Towns Organize

The Greater Big Stone Lake Association was formed today after a meeting in Big Stone City. Otto-Schneck in Ortonville, Minn., was named president with Rev. Fr. George Estergaard and others named to officer roles. The event drew representatives from over a dozen lake-area towns.

Wind Storm Destroys Landmark Church in Springfield

A destructive wind storm at Springfield demolished the Roboite Church near the town edge, toppled from its foundation and flattened it, narrowly missing a nearby house. The event marked the main damage of the day as heat lingered in Bemidji Grand Rapids and Cass Lake area with farm sheds roofs and windmills damaged and grain scattered. No injuries were reported. A heavy rain followed the wind and temperature highs dipped elsewhere in the region.
