Italians Join Nazi Troops At Channel But Gayda Sees Delay

In Washington July 31 the Senate military committee amended the Burke Wadsworth bill to require draft registration for men 22 to 31, trimming the pool to about 4.5 million. Enlistments would be one year for men 18 to 35. Secretary Stimson warned Britain could fall in 20 days and Japan favors Italy and Germany. the administration backs the plan as necessary for defense.

Howes To Lunch With Roosevelt

W. W. Howes reelected Democratic national committeeman from South Dakota travels from Huron to Washington to dine with President Roosevelt at the White House. He will join a five member committee formed at Chicago to pick a successor to James A. Farley whose resignation takes effect August 1. Howes is accompanied by Dick Donohue, Democratic chairman of Minnehaha County, and faced criticism for his Farley vote at Chicago.

London report says the British armed merchant cruiser Alcantara battled a German raider in the south Atlantic. The German ship, mounting four guns per broadside, escaped after being hit by a smoke screen, while Alcantara pursued but could not prevent its escape. Stamp Plan Set For August 14

The Federal Surplus Marketing Administration food stamp plan will be launched in Huron Beadle County on August 14 A mass meeting in Huron August 12 will explain the plan Col Von Spaich of the Milwaukee SMA office will brief attendees A Beadle County welfare office in the courthouse at Huron will issue stamps for public assistance recipients The SMA will also operate a redemption office in Huson for retailers banks and wholesalers and Beadle Brown and Codington counties are coordinating from Aberdeen

Small Grains Ripen Fast but Heat Hurts South Dakota Crops

Federal Meteoroligst BR Laskowski reports that a hot spell hurried small grain maturity in South Dakota while harming corn and gardens. He notes corn deteriorated across the southern two thirds, with fields turning white, and tassels damaged. Grasshoppers are active in corn as small grains were harvested. Rain could aid still-stricken corn not burned too badly.

Huron Chosen For 1941 Convention Of S D Legion

Huron was selected unanimously as the site for the 1941 South Dakota American Legion convention. Delegates also elected state officers and adopted resolutions. Irene Ottmann of Hot Springs became state Auxiliary president, succeeding Zella Scofield as national committeewoman. Elizabeth Ennis and Bazel Johnson were named first and second vice presidents. Lois Hallberg became treasurer. More than 4,000 spectators attended the four days of events, including a 20 block parade, drum and bugle corps exhibitions, and band performances with numerous communities participating.

Bushfield to See Willkie At Farm Conference Monday
