Fourth of July Committee Plans Eugene Celebration

The executive committee for Eugene Fourth of July events met at Cockerline and Wetherbee to plan an entertaining celebration with merchant funding. Subcommittees were named for printing sports music and other duties, with weekly meetings to review soliciting results.

Watts Named Mathematics Chair at Southern Oregon Normal

Homer I Watts of the University of Oregon was chosen by the Southren Oregon State Normal School regents to fill the mathematics chair in Ashland. He learns of the appointment today and plans to graduate with the class of 8 next Thursday. Watts has captained the football team for two years and held officer posts in student groups. He will spend the summer in Athena and report to Ashland to begin the fall term.

Carnival date cancelled for Eugene. Albany contract seals change

F H Bureh of the Southern Carnival Company announced in Eugene that the carnival date was moved to Albany after signing a contract with Albany business men. An Albany excursion train will run July 4 with round trip fare one dollar. other days at one and one third rate.

Death of A Hopkins of Coburg at Portland Hospital

A Hopkins of Coburg died at Portland Hospital from a liver disease at 11 this forenoon after going there about a week ago in hope of surgery the doctors avoided. The body will be brought to Coburg on tonight's train and the funeral set for 11 oclock tomorrow at the Christian church. He left a wife and no son.

Last Meeting of Old Board Ends Term and School Plans

The old school board held its final meeting to discuss a petition to connect Geary school with the Jefferson street sewer project. The High School base will be 31 feet from Eleventh Street, not 23. E Schwarzschild’s term as director and president ends next Monday after four years of service. J H McClung will become the next board president.

Lumber Yard Opens Near Pearl Street for New Lumber Company

F. Mitchell of Long & Bingham Cottage Grove reports yard space secured for Walker Young across the railroad on Pearl Street. The first shipment arrived yesterday with two car loads today. The Eugee Flouring Mill switch will serve the new lumber operation, ensuring convenient access.

Receiving Big Mining Plant in Cottage Grove Oregon

The Oregon Securities Company has taken two carloads of air compressors and drills from Denver for the Champion mill and its various properties. The equipment will power operations at Musick Helena and Champion mines with a large compressor driving a tunnel through Grouse Mountain to enable an electric railway between Champion and Musick. A dam nearby for plant power nears completion, and the electric plant is due from Pittsburgh tomorrow as the firm gears up what may become the Pacific coast's most extensive mining operation.
