Montana to Exchange 25 Million Forest Lands
More than 25,000,000 acres of privately owned land within forest reserves will be exchanged for other forest reserve lands or government timber under a general exchange bill. In Montana alone 3,012,138 acres are scattered across Beartooth Beaverhead bitter Root Flathead and other reserves. The plan aims to remove checkerboard holdings and keep exchanges within forest reserves. Walter Jones of Armstead visited Dillon. Montana Attorney General Rankin filed a complaint alleging high freight rates. Chicago Milwaukee & St Paul Northern Pacific and Gilmore & Pittsburg reply that rates are not oppressive and will not yield fair Montana returns next year. They acknowledge reduced operating costs but say previous rate cuts offset the drop. No hearing date set by the railroad commission.
