Cold Hearts and Pacemakers in Heart Surgery
Bigelow recounts the discovery that cooling lowers metabolism in animals and the early, cautious path to human heart surgery. He notes the pacemaker breakthrough in 1950 and the later use of transistor-based devices, stressing cooperation between industry and research and the temporary role of artificial hearts. He reflects on transplant advances, ongoing rejection challenges, and the rewarding work with dedicated healthcare teams.
