Talks End Wage and Welfare Fund Confrontation
After a week of deadlock operators agreed to a dollar a day wage raise for the United Mine Workers and to double the ten cent per ton welfare fund. The welfare fund would rise by about 100 million dollars annually. Southern operators and steel interests showed the only notable opposition. Harry Moses of steel companies voiced reluctant acceptance of the wage base provision. The group sought a clear union shop definition to eventually require all miners to join UMW, while Lewis could concede on that point. The welfare fund is seen as broadening benefits to non members.
