Weather outlook for the state calls for partly cloudy skies with scattered thundershowers, mainly in the north. Decatur markets quote middling and strict low at noon, with a high of 93 and low of 76 recorded.
The Associated Press reports Russians halted electric power and rail shipments of food and coal to Western Berlin zones. Water supply affected in part of the French sector as Moscow presses to oust Western authorities. Western Allies reject Soviet currency and maintain their own in the city.
Federal courts issued anti strike injunctions on the East and Gulf coasts and in the Great Lakes region. Judge John W. Clancy extended a cooling off order for 80 days affecting 70 000 CIO maritime union workers and two other CIO unions. In San Francisco Judge George B Harris extended a temporary restraining order for 10 days covering five unions representing 30 000 workers.
The draft bill has reached President Truman's desk and he must sign by July 5. It allows 19 to 25 year olds to obtain draft exemptions via National Guard or reserve service and delays induction for 90 days after becoming law. White House timing is unclear though sources expect a full ten day review.
The Tennessee Valley horse show office was opened today by the Decatur Lions Club in Dimsmore Brothers store. The annual event will be held July 29 at Benson Field with committees already shaping details. Tickets will go on sale at a later date, sponsors said.
Alabama health officials say the infantile paralysis situation remains normal despite nationwide outbreaks. Through last week 33 polio cases were reported in Alabama for the year, below or near typical totals, while states such as North Carolina Texas and California show sharp increases.
New York June 24 reports indicate the Joe Louis Jersey Joe Walcott bout will proceed at 9 P M EST at Yankee Stadium after yesterday’s rain postponement. Weather forecasts call for widely scattered showers and cool temperatures tonight.
Funeral services for Clay J Henderson, 27, were held in Limestone county after he was fatally electrocuted while repairing a high power electric line for Duke Power in Greenville South Carolina. Henderson, a Limestone county native, touched a live wire and died instantly. Rites were conducted at Isom's chapel near Athens with pastors officiating. Interment followed in Athens City cemetery under McConnell's supervision. The American Legion conducted military burial rites with six Legionnaires as pallbearers. He is survived by his wife Margaret and three children Betty, Janette, and Don.
Funeral services for Mrs. C. H. Dean, 33, of 207 Sixth Avenue N., are set for Friday at 1 PM at Mutual Service chapel. She died at 5:15 AM at Hamil clinic from injuries suffered May 23 in an automobile accident. Rev. Daniel O'Reilly to officiate.
The Alabama Supreme Court ruled Decatur may legally install on street parking meters overruling Circuit Judge Powell who had found the meter ordinance unconstitutional. The decision cites a 1937 ruling as on a different question. Also the court awarded 3500 Birmingham coal miners unemployment compensation for steel strike losses. The miners worked for Tennessee Coal Iron and Railroad.
Mayor H R Summer told The Daily no definite meter installation plans exist in Decatur. Duncan Meter Corporation has not been contacted. A 1947 contract with Duncan allowed a six month trial. a court suit delayed installation, then the state supreme court reversed a lower ruling, making meters legal and installation expected soon.
Justice Gardner said the original decision was in error. The 1937 Birmingham case held parking meters regulate traffic and a city has as much right to use them as traffic signals. The period also saw a strike closing T. C. IL. captive coal mines and ore. See COURT on Page 2.
Slight damage occurred Wednesday when a 1937 Chevrolet driven by J. N. Freeman halted for a traffic light at Rail road Avenue and West Church Street was struck by a 1941 Buick driven by Georgia Thomas. Officers Terry and McCall noted Thomas would pay damages.
W M Baker probation officer for Alabama outlined duties and aims of parole and probation. He explained the system began in 1840 and 1876 and noted Alabama has 25 officers under the Merit System with 75 parole cases in his district and an 85 percent success rate.
Soft coal operators except steel company mine interests were reported ready to sign a new contract with John L. Lewis. The proposal would raise miners wages by 12 cents an hour and increase the pension fund royalty levy from 10 to 20 cents a ton, funding larger pensions and $100 monthly for retired miners. The plan includes a union shop, Taft Hartley provisions, and $100 vacation pay, with a contract length under negotiation. President Truman’s fact finding board gave a deadline of 4 P.M. today to secure a peace pact or an extension of the existing terms.
Report of the first ballot roll call for the Republican presidential nomination in Philadelphia on June 24 shows Dewey leading with varied results across states. Key results include California 53 Dewey 53 and Michigan 41 for Vandenberg, with several states splitting among Dewey Taft Stassen and Vandenberg.
In Montgomery Alabama a nervous applicant taking a driver's license test rammed a parked car while being observed by State Highway Patrolman Ed Owen. The incident caused minor damage and the driver failed the test.
In Montgomery Alabama on June 24 a man faced a no driver's license ticket but was released after explaining a urgent hospital visit. Sergeant J F Powell and Patrolman Ed Owen delayed action and delayed filing charges until the driver returned from the hospital.
James E Sims of 1008 Magnolia Avenue will join the Decatur city police Friday, Police Chief J B Whitmire announced. Sims replaces Edward Terry, reassigned to the fire department earlier this month. Sims is a World War II veteran.
City Council committee led by Russell Speake continues to seek a permanent amusement tax schedule with Crescent Amusement officials. The Crescent cases, including Princess, Roxy and Capital theatres, remain unsettled while both sides offer concessions and an appeal to the state supreme court is avoided.
In Selma Alabama on June 24 two women Mrs Edward Billingsley and Mrs A H Tucker of Tallassee were trapped in about three feet of water after a car driven by Tucker ran off the highway and overturned into a creek. Wreckers removed them to a hospital and state patrol indicated injuries were not yet known. Orville Blake also of Tallassee was slightly hurt with two other passengers in the car returning from Louisiana after a relative's funeral.
Decatur Elks and Civitan members volunteered donations to the Crusade for Children. Civitan members contributed 65 dollars with five from the Civinettes, while the Elks gave 79.78 dollars. Crusade chairman Marvin Eubanks spoke and screened a film on needs of 230 million starving children. Mrs. H. Winton also contributed. The report notes a campaign start planned for Monday June 28.
At the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia on June 24 Gov. Thomas E. Dewey leads the unofficial roll call with 517 votes, short of the 548 needed. The tally shows Taft 274 Stassen 149 Vandenberg 62 Warren 57 MacArthur 7 Baldwin 19 Martin 10 Reece 1.
