Partly cloudy forecast with scattered thunder showers. Decatur cotton market quoted middling 36.3 and strict law 35.3. Police booked two for drunkenness and one for traffic law. Locals announce travels and visits to Florida with several business and community notices.
The Weather Bureau maintains its forecast that the Louis Walcott bout will proceed at Yankee Stadium at 9 pm despite earlier postponements. Skies are expected to be mostly fair with scattered showers possible, and posttime temperatures in the 60s.
John L. Lewis and most soft coal operators signed a new contract giving miners a one dollar daily wage increase and doubled funds for the welfare pension. The agreement preserves most terms of the previous deal including the union shop, despite Taft Hartley limits. One steel-owned mine operator, Harry M. Moses, balked at signing. The pact takes effect July 1 as vacations begin for miners who return July 6.
Senator James E. Murray quoted President Truman saying the Republican national convention shows conservative interests in control and dominating its actions. Truman has not officially commented on Dewey's nomination or the convention.
Jack C. Catlett of Decatur has received a principal appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. The nomination came from Representative Robert E. Jones and requires reporting for examination.
Police in Decatur and Danville Road units led by Police Chief J B Whitmire searched the Ridgeway area after a motorist reported a mountain lion on the road. Officers Sandlin and Pack Self carried shotguns and pistols but saw nothing. the chief quipped the team might have to go to town alone if the big cat appeared.
Handy Ellis a former Alabama lieutenant governor proposes a civil rights plank for the 1944 party platform. He argues federal legislation must not infringe on states rights especially over voting lynching segregation and employment practices. Ellis and Judge D Hardy Riddle threaten to walk out if civil rights language is strong.
The CIO United Auto Workers countered Ford Motor's 11 to 14 cent hourly raise with demands totaling about 28 cents more per hour. The package includes a flat 14 cent raise a company financed health plan eight cents and elimination of wage differentials including night shift and merit pay terms. Ford had offered 14 cents to most workers and 11 cents to those earning below average.
Willis Campbell pleaded guilty to four recent Falkville break ins. A probation hearing is scheduled for Monday before Circuit Court. Prosecutors seek probation with sentence deferred pending review of Campbell’s conduct and rehabilitation prospects.
A motion filed in Cullman Alabama asks Judge Crow to delay ruling on the paternity and common law marriage suits against Gov. James E. Folsom until after a hearing next week. Christine Putman claims Folsom is her husband and the boy James Douglas’s father. Shelburne represents Ms. Johnston and seeks to pause the decision prior to the paternity hearing.
Kingman Shelburne filed a precautionary motion in Cullman Circuit Court asking that Christine Putman Johnston’s suit against Governor C James Folsom not be dismissed before a July 1 hearing. The move follows Christine and her brother Carter Putman requesting dismissal of common law marriage and paternity suits against Alabama Governor.
The Associated Press reports Soviet cutoffs of food and electricity in Western Berlin aimed at pressuring the Allies to withdraw. Bevin and Clay cautioned war or occupation withdrawal as the 2 million residents stayed calm. Warsaw talks pushed for a four power framework and a neutral German government under Moscow influence.
Mayor H R Summer announced a Saturday statement on installing parking meters in Decatur. The state supreme court ruled meters may be legally installed, reversing a Morgan circuit court decision that found them unconstitutional. Trial runs six months with merchants allowed to appeal to the Council to remove meters if objections persist.
A hearing on revocation of five years probation for James Thomas is scheduled before Circuit Judge James H. Crow. He faces new charges of grand larceny concealing stolen property and conspiring to commit a crime or corrupt public justice in connection with a theft from Robert L. Lakey Saturday night and the death of Thomas F. Woodruff Jr. Thomas was convicted February 3 of grand larceny and sentenced to two years in prison, with probation set February 25.
Washington officials mobilize a new peacetime draft as President Truman signs the selective service bill creating a two year draft. Registration starts around August 16 with 205000 men called for two years of service and 161000 18 year olds volunteering for one year training.
Tremonton Utah four Borgstrom brothers killed in 1944 in the Solomons and Europe are laid to rest together in flag draped caskets after honored escort overseas. Gen Mark Clark Gov Herbert Maw and dignitaries will preside over the funeral services. The brothers died within six months of each other during World War II.
A 20 day recess was granted by the Alabama Public Service Commission in the Alabama Tennessee and Northern railroad hearing on dropping passenger service between Mobile and Reform. Commission leader Gordon Persons noted extra data is being prepared on postal and express service along the 14 mile line. President J E Gilliland said the railroad lost 37000 last year with only 5000 from passenger operations, and warned a complete shutdown could follow if the petition fails. Town representatives from Chatom Carrollton Butler Reform York Geiger and Millry opposed the proposal.
Syracuse police say 27 year old Elmer L Paul confessed to beating two year old Feilder about 50 or 60 times with his fist. Deputy Chief Fred G Arnold said the incident occurred after the child's mother Anne Feilder went to a movie. Paul lived in the same house and was present when officers arrived. No charge was announced at report time.
The Decatur high school band will perform at 2:30 PM Saturday in the vacant lot beside The Decatur Daily building to support the Crusade for Children. Local booths run by VFW Auxiliary will open, with volunteers collecting contributions as part of a nationwide drive to raise 60 million dollars for needy children.
Philadelphia June 25 Harold E Stassen emerged as the convention’s most notable after defeating his own bid for nomination. He praised Dewey while urging supporters to back him in the fall and acknowledged the end of his campaign with a dignified ascent. Dewey held a commanding lead with 434 votes by press time.
Philadelphia convention ends with Warren chosen by acclamation as Dewey’s running mate to form an East West ticket aimed at ending 16 years of Democratic rule. Dewey weighs Bricker option before finalizing selection as delegates rally to the announced pairing.
Reserve Life Insurance opens a Decatur area office to serve Morgan and nearby counties. Arthur O. Hanson from Birmingham leads a five person staff with plans to expand. The agency offers life health accident and hospitalization policies and has representatives in principal area cities.
