Three requirements determine disability benefits eligibility
Three eligibility rules govern Social Security disability. A worker must meet all three: sufficient recent work in covered employment. severe impairment lasting or expected to last at least 12 months or death. and no substantial gainful work during the disability period. Self employed status complicates the third rule, as ongoing farming or business activity can disqualify benefits unless involvement ceases or is not substantial.
