Hardy grapes thrive on Polk farm in Wisconsin
Elmer Swenson, a 69 year old retiree, has spent four decades developing winter hardy grapes for the North. He has two varieties on the market Edelweiss and Swenson Red donated to the University of Minnesota with modest royalties, while two more Kay Gray and St Croix near commercial release. Swenson hopes for better results in 10 years and has earned recognition from the Minnesota Grape Growers Association and Wisconsin Garden Club Federation for his pioneering work. He began planting commercial hybrids in 1940 and draws on early reading of grape culture to guide his self taught breeding. He lives on a family farm near Osceola with his wife Louise and plans further partnerships for marketing.

University of Wisconsin Eau Claire geographer Richard Palm forecasts a six month winter for 1982 83 with heavy snow and colder than normal temps. National FFA President to Speak at Granton Banquet
Granton High School will host National FFA President Scott Neasham of Newton Iowa as the featured speaker at the FFA banquet at 8 p m October 26 in the school gym. Principal Francis Steiner says it is Neashams only area visit this year and his last official event before the Kansas City convention with state officers in attendance and over 100 on a waiting list for tickets.
