Mourning dove status fuels Wisconsin hunting debate
The mourning dove straddles hunting status, being a game bird in some states but not in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Conservation Congress debated reclassifying the dove, but strong opposition kept it from advancing. The bird remains common across the continental U S, nesting widely and attracting backyard feeders.

Private riverfront land use plan affects Minnesota Iowa and Wisconsin
The Army Corps of Engineers and the U S Fish and Wildlife Service will phase out private use of federal land along the Upper Mississippi from Minneapolis to Guttenberg 255 miles downstream. Leases for 900 holders will end permits after 1990 but may be transferred before then. Critics warn the plan could push boaters into costly harbors and close river islands to public access. The policy aims to reclaim public shoreline for boating camping hunting fishing and other recreation while preserving most land for public use.

Third California condor chick grows strong in captivity
At the San Diego Zoo the third California condor chick hatched in captivity and emerged from its shell a week ago. Biologists worried blood clots in the egg could threaten its life, but spokesman Jeff Jouette said the chick appears perfect and vigorous. A fourth condor was also hatching, with a hole already broken in its shell late last week and expected to hatch by the weekend.
