Washington reports a 0.7 percent May rise in farm prices, the fifth straight monthly increase. Potatoes, hay, eggs, corn and lettuce drove gains, while cattle, milk, tomatoes, wheat and onions reduced the net rise. Prices paid by farmers for expenses climbed 0.6 percent due to feeds and fuel with only a slight year ahead income outlook.
Federal Judge Perry ruled the 50 cent dairy assessment must end and funds refunded, while USDA appeals. The 4th U.S. Circuit has not yet ruled on the reversal request, and dairy plants in Wisconsin continue collecting the deduction as officials in Chicago confirm. About 28.6 million dollars have been collected from 250,000 farmers, deposited in the Commodity Credit Corp. account.
National Weather Service forecasters in the Twin Cities expect partly cloudy skies on Thursday Friday and Saturday with warm temperatures. Overnight lows will be in the 40s and 50s and daytime highs should reach the 70s across all three days.
Barron Electric Cooperative members approved a ban on using herbicides to clear brush from power line rights of way by a 230 to 206 vote on Friday night at Barron High School. The measure, led by Joanne Martin and Scott Tice, ends decades of debate over chemical use with manual brush clearing cited as safer.
The USDA will keep the dairy support price at 13.10 dollars per hundred pounds for Oct 1 1983 through Sept 30 1984. It proposes raising the 50 cent assessment to one dollar starting Aug 1 1983 through Sept 30 1984 with a 50 cent credit if milk production is cut during a defined base period. Comments are invited until June 30 1983 to ASCS USDA Washington DC.
