Hikes Planned in Social Security Benefits Projected
The House Ways and Means Committee outlined a welfare bill with cost of living Social Security raises and a Nixon family assistance plan. It may seek additional boosts, with a 10 percent rise already in effect, and possible tax increases tied to wage growth. Disability retirees would gain Medicare eligibility after two years, and widows would receive full benefits. A new minimum benefit for long-time covered workers would rise to 150 dollars for 30 years, adjusted down by five dollars per year for fewer years. New rules also allow continued work after 65 with earnings affecting benefits and a one percent annual credit toward eventual retirement benefits.
