Two Local Sailors Fight First Battle Aboard New Cruiser

Troy Kirkland of Comanche and Lester W. Stephenson of Oleman serve aboard a new cruiser that saw battle against Japan. The crew endured a tense alert as Betty bombers approached, and the captain hailed their objective achieved with minimal losses to their force. Kirkland is one of three sons of Mr and Mrs Frank Kirkland.

Amity Home Demonstration held a May 4 meeting at the home of Mrs. O J Reynolds with 12 old members, 2 newcomers, and four visitors. A kraut making program by Mmes Haynes, Martin, and Stodghill was featured, followed by refreshments for numerous members and visitors including Mrs Lil ly Alford and Mrs Russell White.

Lt Vaughn Attends University of the South Pacific in South Pacific

Lt C L Vaughn among over 1,000 service members enrolled in the University of the South Pacific first Army overseas college program. Classes three nights weekly at Major General Gilbreath's base, with soldiers sailors Marines nurses Red Cross staff and New Zealand civilians. Program offers 26 courses and credits via the Armed Forces Institute.

Lane couple attend all day memorial services at Stag Creek

Dr and Mrs J O Lane attend memorial services at Stag Creek described as one of the best in years. Rev Wilson Fielder gave the principal address recounting two years in a Japanese concentration camp. Among out of county visitors was Mrs Lane's brother J W Hood of Slaton.

Death of Pvt Caston Stephens Details Given to Wife

Details about Private Caston W Stephens killed in action on 24 September 1944 in France were sent to his wife Mrs Ara Geraldine Thedford Stephens of Carlton Texas. Captain Gerard T Armstrong of the 320th Infantry describes his honorable death on 24 September and burial at US Military Cemetery No 1 in Angely France two days later.

Dr and Mrs William M Cauley announce the arrival of twin sons born May 28 in a Lubbock hospital. They name the boys David Jackson and Steven Carter Cauley. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs W C Cauley of Comanche. Dr Cauley is a Lubbock optometrist. Sgt and Mrs John R Buchanan of Dodge City Kansas visited Comanche weekend with Miss Lillie Graham and parents.
