Messersmith Shuts Out Expos Before Ninth Inning Hit Breaks It

Atlanta pitcher Messersmith allowed only one hit, a ninth inning single by Pepe Mangual, to lift the Braves to a 2-0 win over the Montreal Expos. He struck out seven with one walk, earning his third win against five losses. The Expos threatened in the first, but a fielding error and walks came to nothing. Office and Henderson provided the Braves’ runs, scoring on a single and a wild pitch in the first and second innings respectively.
