1977 hurricane season begins with center tracking storms
The National Hurricane Center starts 24 hour operations to monitor storms in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and Atlantic as the season runs through November 30. Most storms form in midsummer when tropical waters warm. No major hurricane has hit south Florida in 12 years and Texas in seven, but a hit this year remains possible.

Forecasting Limits In Hurricanes Confounds Experts
Forecaster John Hope says the odds stay the same each new year and the hurricane center can locate storms but not predict strength or exact landfall. He notes radar, satellites, and flights help track, yet forecasters cannot determine how strong storms will become or where they will strike. Early-season patterns favor storms forming in the west Caribbean or Gulf moving north, with shifts by midsummer.

Hurricane patterns and cancer nitrite panel expand
The piece surveys Atlantic storm behavior with past hurricane strike patterns since 1940s and notes warnings from Dr. Neil Frank on coastal preparedness. It also reports a USDA panel expanding with cancer experts to assess nitrates and nitrites in cured meats, debating tests, substitutes, and safety.
