U.S. Disappointed as NSC Talks Stall on Energy Panel

The United States voiced disappointment over a failure to reach a permanent producer consumer energy panel at the North South conference in Paris. Talks stretch into a fourth day with cabinet leaders, including Cyrus Vance, departing. Agreement did emerge on billion dollar funds to relieve poverty and stabilize raw material prices, while debates over debt relief and oil supply coordination continued.

Handicapped under 65 gain use of city handibus

City Administrator Lloyd Castner announces a new policy allowing handicapped persons under 65 to use the Senior Citizens Handibus aligning with state guidelines. Current riders must register via City Hall and buy a $4 ticket set for 20 rides.

Rhodesian Pullout After Mozambique Raid Ends

Rhodesia announces troops have begun pulling out of Mozambique after overran four guerrilla bases and captured Mapai. Lt. Gen. Peter Walls says the five day operation achieved its objective and forces will return to Rhodesia. He denies Mozambican military contact and cites civilian safety. International protests followed, including U.N. and Western governments.

Parking stalls added downtown in Columbus by DAA

The Downtown Action Association announced the acquisition of 26 additional parking stalls in Columbus downtown. The stalls were leased from Steve Haney of Gass Haney Funeral Home and are located on 25th Avenue near the Old Mill public parking area. Haney is a DAA member. The DAA spokesman said the move is the first of many improvements for the downtown area.

Mayor's vote ends deadlock on Hall of Justice amendment

Columbus City Council voted to accept a Platte County amendment to the Hall of Justice lease changing occupancy from 1976 to on or before Sept 1 1977 for the Columbus Police Department. Mayor George Johansen broke the 4-4 tie in favor while opposition criticized the decision. The meeting covered budget moves including a pay raise for City Administrator Lloyd Castner and various road, drainage, and infrastructure items.

Cooling trend with sun in Nebraska forecast

A slight cooling trend was expected in Nebraska with mostly sunny skies and only a slim chance of isolated thunderstorms. Cooler air moved into eastern Nebraska behind a cold front but temperatures rose into the 70s by midday as high pressure kept conditions dry and mild tonight. Overnight lows ranged from 50 to 64 across cities, with NW winds gusting near 40 mph in spots. Friday brings partly cloudy skies and a small thunderstorm chance, highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Extreme high readings included 111 degrees in Buckeye Arizona and Blythe California.

Good Sam rally planned in Columbus Nebraska

Columbus hosts the Nebraska Good Sam state rally expected to be the largest in seven years with about 179 families pre registered and 200 camping units. Rally leaders Kenneth Kesler and Mrs Richard Melichar welcome early arrivals at Agricultural Park as events kick off Friday with bike rides tours demonstrations and a potluck supper followed by opening ceremonies and Sweet Adelines. The weekend features horseshoe contests a flea market tractor pulls a bicycle rodeo a catered dinner dancing and Sunday church services.
