Approve power output increase at Cooper plant
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved raising Cooper nuclear station output near Brownville Nebraska from 50 percent to about 60 percent of capacity. Tests will determine exact output under waterflow and plant vibrations, which do not affect safety. If sustained, 460000 kilowatts may be produced, aiding summer power costs.

Change thinking on legislation protects farmers against packer bankruptcy
White House orders reversing Agriculture Department stance urged Congress to reject bills intended to shield farmers when meat packers fail. The agency had supported the measures but was told to oppose them, arguing increased regulation conflicts with a shift toward deregulation. Proposals would require bonds from packers and grant farmer priority in bankruptcies while allowing court actions against insolvent packers.
