European meat demand unlikely to grow as fast in coming decade

A Foreign Agriculture Service expert says Western Europe will not match past decade gains in meat and pork consumption. Dr Brice Meeker notes per capita red meat intake rose 6 percent in CM nations from 1965 to 1975, with beef veal up 15 percent and pork up 2 percent, while poultry shows room to grow. He cites income levels as the main driver, warns of slowed growth and possible tight soybean supplies, but expects U.S. soy yields to rise next decade.

Energy-saving credit plan gains slow start in rural areas

Washington officials say the Agriculture Department weatherization loan program has begun slowly with about 107 cooperatives signing on. Borrowers up to 15600 a year for a family of four can get up to 1500 at 8 percent for five years to insulate homes. The program, launched by Agriculture Secretary Bob Bergland, faces procedural hurdles and may gain traction as rules allow small service charges and more cooperatives participate.
