Remembering World War I Doughboys and Home Front Spirit
A reminiscence recalls 1917 life from uniforms to tow lines of effort. Officers kept similar dress but privates wore looser trousers and a cowboy style cap. Camps spurred new life, women knit, children thrifted, and war bonds funded relief. Names like Chateau-Thierry and Meuse Argonne defined a era of sacrifice and resilience. In Washington, Sen. Lloyd Bentsen criticizes Ford campaign travel funding. Ford urged to pay from his campaign chest like other contenders.
