President Ford signaled a compromise with Congress by delaying his veto of a six month extension to domestic oil price controls. Senate leaders said the move aims to allow time for a gradual lifting plan, amid Labor Day weekend traffic safety crackdowns across multiple states.
Wildcat pickets shut down much of the nations coal industry in a three week walkout likely to last through Labor Day weekend. In West Virginia and neighboring states about 60 000 miners were idle as courts issued back to work orders and some operations reported partial reopenings in Pennsylvania and Kentucky. UMW leaders faced pressure as sanctions and threats of further court action intensified.
GRAND ISLAND Neb UP The Central Platte Natural Resource District Board approved a 40000 flood control project for Polk County and spent time on Nebraska's new groundwater control plan. The project calls for a road dam south of Polk at a highway crossing draining up to about 700 acres into the Platte River.
Venezuela nationalizes its oil sector, creating Petroven to run the industry. A 27 article bill sets a 120 day countdown to state takeover of assets worth about $5 billion.
Local parish plans a Tuesday Sept 2 ceremony for the dedication of a new St Anthony of Padua statue. At 7 p.m. a Mass precedes an outdoor shrine blessing and procession. The Carrara marble statue, imported from Italy, stands atop a landscaped brick semicircle lit at night.
Secretary of State Kissinger voiced strong optimism after eight hours of talks with Israeli leaders and Egyptian aides in Jerusalem. He aims to initial a two and a half page pact early next week while Egypt cautioned that key points remain unsettled.
Weather summary from United Press International notes a weak low pressure system over southwest Kansas pushing warmth into eastern Nebraska from the Gulf of Mexico, with a cold front in the Nebraska Panhandle. Midday conditions ranged from clear to partly cloudy, a shower in Omaha area, and rainfall overnight from 3 inches at Ashland to 1/10 to 1/2 inch elsewhere. Nebraska State Patrol reports water over U.S. 6 near Ashland, up to two feet deep in places along a quarter mile stretch.
Sixteen year old Sleva Mack sustained a broken right leg and facial and head bruises when the motorcycle he drove collided with a vehicle driven by Beatrice Cossack at 13th Street and 28th Avenue. Mack was transported to Behler Community Hospital. Total vehicle damage reached $500. A second Columbus accident involved Thomas Homan and Walter Kraycki with $200 damage. Platte County Sheriff’s office reported no further incidents.
