Fall Fertilizing Fits Farms With Light Spring Help

Fall fertilizer applications suit many farms as they expand and lack spring labor. Use 0-20-0 or 0-20-20 on alfalfa topdress and target fields hard to reach in spring or boggy pastures where early growth matters. Some situations warrant avoiding fall fertilization to prevent losses from weather or washouts.

Heavy spring runoff risks washing fertilizer into streams

Passage notes that in the spring a heavy water run-off could carry a significant amount of fertilizer away, risking soil and water contamination as nutrients are flushed from fields into nearby waterways.
