A citizen advisory committee presented a Preliminary Report on the district's high school project. It covers enrollment for a 600 student facility, curriculum needs, financing terms eight to nine percent of state valuation, and site planning near the William Holbrook farm.
County officials plan to appoint a new member to the County Road Commission Friday October 12 to replace Chairman Avery Barber whose term has expired. The selection will consider other candidates. nominees must reside in one of Clare county's southern townships Garfield Surrey Grant or Sheridan. Present members include Ed Bruce and Fred Jones with Fred Jones the first appointee under the new system.
Dr. Albert E Heustis state health commissioner urged immediate polio vaccination for all Michigan residents up to age 20 and for pregnant women. Vaccines are available through regular sources and state vaccine remains for young children and pregnant women. The effort aims to boost protection beyond 75 percent of those susceptible and may shift future recommendations as experience grows.
Clare Rebekah Lodge observed its 66th anniversary with an October 7 program honoring twenty year veterans. Doris Mitchell presided. Ada Beemeéy Genevieve Hall and Marlene McBride were initiated. Max Effie Harvey Eliza Johnson Cora Parrish Marguerite DeArmond were noted as veterans.
The CHS Pioneers lose 12 to 6 at Durand as Clare capitalizes on CHS errors in the fourth quarter. Dick Roe banks a 60 yard drive with a 3 yard run for Clare’s second quarter lead, while injuries and penalties hinder CHS late. Next week Clare travels to St Louis. The Clare J V beats Shepherd 19 to 18 on October 4.
Judy Brown highlights Lieutenant Jack Lansing praised by the Pioneer staff for his duties patrolling area signs and helping younger students. He enjoys collecting model cars and playing football and is the son of Mr and Mrs Percy Lansing of State Street.
Riverside Grange, 16 miles north and 5 east of Clare, named district winner in the Grange Community Service contest. The group served the community with cemetery cleanup before Memorial Day, built a ball diamond for youth, packed Christmas boxes for nine shut ins, aided 4-H at a Clare Manufacturing Company picnic, and supported education and agricultural programs. Jesse and Eva Newman of Beaverton are Master and secretary.
The St Cecilia Civics Club plans a get out the vote campaign with sixth to eighth graders. They will create posters for merchants to display and offer babysitting services to help parents reach the polls before Election Day at City Hall.
About eighty people attended the Clare County Farm Bureau annual meeting at Clare High School. Dan Reed urged unity on upcoming legislative matters including tractor safety and driver licensing for farm equipment. A film on the national Farm Bureau convention was shown, and local musicians performed. The group endorsed highway advertising trees and adopted a resolution for disinfectant use by milk haulers to prevent Bangs disease.
The Clare IOOF apologizes for an error in this week’s Clare Sentinel condolence notice for Mr Alfred Purdy who died October 4. The notice wrongly listed him as a Mason affiliate. The lodge offers sincere apologies to Mr Purdy’s family and friends and to IOOF Lodge Brothers.
The Clare High School Band Boosters met in the band room on Monday October 8 to plan for the homecoming game October 26 against Ithaca and to discuss senior band Hobo Lunch arrangements. Officials named include Mrs Floyd Norcutt chairing the meeting and Mrs Fred Bell as lunch chair.
Voters flocked to the Clare city clerk’s office ahead of the October 8 registration deadline adding nearly 300 names. Clare’s total electors reached 1700 to 1800 with countywide rounds in Surrey Farwell and Grant townships also showing sizable gains. Some voters already registered discovered their names were omitted from a prior list.
Twelve student teachers from Central Michigan College participate in an expanded extern program at Clare Public Schools. English, Dramatics, physical education, sports, agriculture, typing, U.S. Government, social studies, Michigan History, and speech correction are covered, with most students teaching one hour daily.

The Men s Fellowship of the First Congregational Church hosts an 8 p m forum with State Senate candidates Charles Prescott Republican and Clayton Dishong Democrat. Each will speak about twenty minutes then answer five questions from attendees about issues like schools highways and mental health. The public is invited.
University of Michigan visitor William C Weaver observed Clare Public School for accreditation by U of M and North Central Association. He praised the facility and library and noted adequate testing. Overcrowding concerns were offset by plans to enlarge facilities and orderly student conduct.
