Beavers and Squirrels Help Shape Michigan's Forests
Michigan curator William H. Burt argues that beavers and squirrels act as nature's tillers and planters. Beavers raise the water table by damming streams forming open meadows that support deer and elk, while squirrels plant nuts and small mammals curb insect damage and mulch the forest floor reducing erosion.

Yellow Gains As Color For Hunter Clothes
As a new hunting season approaches the controversy over yellow clothing rises again. Tests by the California Association and the National Rifle Association show yellow is most visible to both color normal and color blind hunters. Red ranks fifth among six colors. Dr Wayne H Chapman cites Minnesota study linking color blindness to higher accident risk and notes yellow’s contrast with surroundings while red blends in. California findings are tested nationwide under varying light and foliage. Three of four Minnesota major accidents involved hunters with far below normal vision, with potential improvement from proper care.

Michigan Rules Warn Hunters to Skip Wood Ducks
Michigan hunters are urged to avoid shooting wood ducks when the waterfowl season opens October 1 as regulations again prohibit taking this species. Wood ducks, or woodies, are migrating early, but populations have declined in the Mississippi flyway to about 20 percent of ten years ago. Several northern states have banned wood duck hunting this year to protect the species.
