Clare County supervisors are called into session Monday for the October meeting. Chairman Albert Haley will open with the gavel as the group tackles the budget for the upcoming year and various county reports. Sessions typically last six days, with a possible seventh if needed.
Clare Teen Town gains a $100 cash gift from the Clare Kiwanis Club with additional $25 to $75 gifts from individual Kiwanians to support the Teen Town fund. Some money will redecorate and equip the teen center on West Fifth Street while the Clare Chamber of Commerce offers nonfinancial backing and moral support.
John Foster Isabella of the U.S. Soil Conservation Service was assigned to the Isabella County Soil Conservation District and began his duties October 7. He just completed a training center program in Ohio covering engineering layout soil and water management research woodland and land management agronomy and farm planning. Foster moved his wife Wilma and four children to Mt. Pleasant from Marshall.
Clare shuts the public dump Tuesday from 4 PM and all day Wednesday for rat extermination by Arwell Inc under a one year contract. A very deadly poison is used to bait rodents and entering the dump during closure will be dangerous.
The Bay Midland and Saginaw counties study a two year start for Tri County College with a possible four year program later. A 21 member needs committee urges science and liberal arts tracks to serve education adult studies and occupational training amid rising enrollments projected to 1600 by 1960 and 2700 by 1970. Projected per student costs rely on 150 tuition 190 state aid and 140 local taxes across the three counties.
Gordon M. Kleiner son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Klener of Clare was ordained to the gospel ministry at Eagle Church of God on Sunday night October 6 The service featured local musicians and visiting evangelist Bill Bollmer The ordination prayer was given by Rev F E Snyder and the certificate placed by Elza Beety Kleiner has past experience in World War II attended Findlay College and is a field representative of Findlay College Ohio The ordination drew many friends and relatives
Clare Pioneers beat Ithaca 20 to 13 in mid Michigan B league play. Nolan and Roe led balanced offense with 343 total yards as Clare collected seven first downs and produced two early touchdowns, while Ithaca added a late score before a key interception ended drives.
The Clare County Home Demonstration women announce the District Rally for the Standish District to be held next Wednesday October 16 at the VFW Hall in Harrison. About 150 women are expected and a chicken barbecue by Paul Gibson is planned. Mrs. Ben Mukkala of Marquette will present the program after returning from the ACWOW Triennial in Ceylon. Reservations are due by October 10.
Miss Edna Burton of Alma will be guest speaker at Brown Corners United Brethren Church Friday evening October 11 at o'clock. Miss Nancy Hull teacher at the Secondary School High School Mattra Sierra Leone West Africa sends Africa pictures to interest missionary minded people and students. There will be good music and an invitation to all churches and friends to attend.
Visitors swarm toward St. Ignace and Mackinaw City for the Ferry Finale Bridge Beginning as the state ferries end service. A $100 million structure will connect Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas for the first time, marking a historic transportation milestone. The ferries began July 31, 1923 with the Ariel as the first boat.
Clare hosts a two day Harvest Fiesta Friday and Saturday with colorful window displays, street decorations, costumed sales staff, outdoor music and broadcasts. The Clare Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event with prize awards totaling one hundred dollars. Participating merchants include Dunlop Cafe, Kroger, Clare Sentinel, Loomis Machine Shop, and many others offering once a year fall merchandise and home needs.
Flint police Lieutenant Wilburn Legree of the safety division gave two assembly programs to Harrison Community Schools grade pupils on Monday. Known as the Singing Cop, he impresses children with the importance of practicing safety rules.
Michigan bankers credit autumn leaves with boosting vacation deposits as the tourism season extends past Labor Day. Bankers like Ed Moloney of Cheboygan State Savings Bank cite higher six week post Labor Day deposits and growing loans to resort operators, while state officials foresee stability and expanding winter sports promotion by the Michigan Tourist Council.
Mrs. Caroline Miller of Fowler will attend her son Herman W. Miller and daughter-in-law in Eight Point Lake as they celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on October 20 at St John Lutheran Church in Clare. The elder Mrs. Miller turns 100 on March 25, 1958. A reception in the church basement will follow the vows and ceremony at 2 30 p.m. All friends and relatives are invited.
The combined Boy Scout and Girl Scout Finance Campaign organization is shaping up to launch contributions from residents in Clare Harrison Farwell Lake George and Lake Station. Clare special gifts campaign started earlier with Dr. Glen Born. Harrison campaign leaders named with Howard Morton as gifts chair and George Nash as prospect chair among others. Allan Ott announced Clare general campaign leaders Mrs Gladys Flood Mrs Joy Miller Mrs Joan Goldammer Mrs Marge Burdo and Mrs Helen LaGee. A city wide meeting of campaign workers will be held this week Thursday to discuss procedures.
Lawrence Thomas, 47, of Mt. Pleasant, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct before Justice William B. Dunlop in Clare on October 8 and was fined 20.30 dollars plus costs after an 11:15 p.m. arrest by Clare City Police. William D. Dougherty, 44, of Clare, was charged with driving under the influence on US-10 in Grant Township, pleaded guilty, fined 54.40 dollars in Municipal Court, and surrendered his license.
Clare County Agricultural Society will hold its annual meeting Thursday October 17 at 2 PM in the Harrison courthouse. The meeting will elect officers and board members, review the 1957 financial report, and set plans for the 1958 county fair. Members gain voting rights by entering exhibits. township supervisors and exhibitors participate.
Youth groups from Arthur Center Brown Corners Coldnville Dover Eagle Elm Grove and Herrick gather for a Sunday October 13 rally at Eagle Church at 8 pm with Rev. Elza Beery of Eagle and Arthur Center as speaker. All interested youths urged to attend.
The church school of the First Congregational Church will host a UNICEF Halloween drive. Children will carry cannisters to collect coins for UNICEF to fund food and medicine for needy children worldwide. One penny will buy five glasses of milk, notes minister Hugh Kennedy.
Salt River Farm Bureau officers were elected for the coming year at a meeting held October 2 at the home of Mr and Mrs William Strauch. New chairman Paul Gross. vice chairman Mrs Paul Gross. discussion leader Mrs John Gross. Blue Cross chairman Mrs John Methner. secretary Mrs James Callihan. Women's activity chairman Mrs Archie Jourdain. minute man William Strauch. publicity chairman and recreation Mrs Kenneth Mogg. Eight families attended. The next meeting will be November 6 at the home of Mr and Mrs Clarence Methner.
