Major stream improvement work advances in Michigan
Conservation Department crews completed a major $150 000 Cedar River project this fall in Clare and Gladwin counties. Spring maintenance will finish the two year effort to improve fish conditions and curb erosion. Additional dam and fence work continued this year on four other stream systems including Pine Creek Dickinson County Manistee Crawford and Huron Washtenaw and Livingston counties. A separate $140 000 White River project in Newaygo County is half done. Pine Creek work concluded last month with $24 000 earmarked for next year. The Manistee River long range unit finished this season and the Huron River two year program was completed as easements allow. Stream crews also survey Pilgrim River Houghton County the Sucker River Alger and Luce counties and the Escanaba River main branch in Marquette County to control stagnation and drainage and support water fowl.

Mink hunting advice halts coat plans for wife
Associate Professor Barbee O Roke of the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources warns against mink trapping for a wife’s hunting season. He notes mink evade traps, females stay in place with kits, and males are elusive, making a coat costly and impractical to assemble from wild pelts. He says buy a coat instead of trapping.

Wave guides promise high capacity long distance service
Thirty years of Bell Labs research yields a copper spring inside a flexible cover, creating a wave guide cable that can bend around obstacles and run uphill or down. It could carry tens of thousands of long distance calls and television programs at once, enabling thinner future guides and lower rates.
