Fred Schaaf Mrs Mable Horton and Miss Mary Gilmore were honored at a luncheon in Harrison for their service in the county Social Welfare office. Horton and Gilmore each served about 15 years while Schaaf totals 28. Gilmore was absent. Schaaf remains on the welfare board and Horton keeps her Friend of the Court post. Probate Judge George Bates and Frank Littlefield spoke of their years of service as courthouse staff and co hosts Mrs Whilden Hughes and Mrs Clare Hecker assisted.

State Police Recruiting Progress Reported From Mt Pleasant
The Mt Pleasant Post reports a statewide drive to recruit 200 troopers is progressing with 43 signed in the area from Ithaca southward. Applications close November 30 and the civil service exam is set for December 17. 38 of the 50 new troopers recently graduated at East Lansing as Commissioner Childs presented badges. A new school will start soon to graduate the remaining recruits and fill vacancies.

Small Fire Nipped Before Much Damage
A small fire in a garage on West Seventh Street belonging to Mike Doherty was extinguished at noon Monday before causing damage. The Glaze Fire Department arrived after the blaze was noticed. Collision Claims Life Of Flint Man On Curved Highway
A Flint resident Howard Lanterman, 45, was killed when his car side swiped another vehicle on a curve about three miles north of Harrison and went out of control. He was ejected and died instantly. The other driver was hospitalized at Central Michigan Hospital in Mt. Pleasant. Lanterman’s wife and daughter survive. body sent to a Flint funeral home.

Spare Tire Theft Report From Parked Car on Wheaton Street
Clare police report a spare tire jack and small tools were stolen from a station wagon owned by Dick Groves while parked on Wheaton Street in front of his home. City Buys New Scraper For Snow
The City of Clare buys a Root Spring scraper for a city truck to aid snow removal in residential areas. Dell Schultz of Ithaca won the bid at 1555 dollars, and a truck will be sent to Ithaca this week to install the scraper. 28 Students Eye Tests Conclude Program
Shirley Armentrout reports the eye testing program ended Tuesday with 828 students examined. Grades 1-8 had 471 tested with 59 needing specialist eye doctor care, and 375 high school students with 41 requiring attention.
