Higher Turkey Prices Seen With Brighter Holiday Season
Poultry economist Henry El Larzelere of Michigan State predicts a stronger fall market as federal data show fewer turkeys hatched in early 1955. Heavy breed poults slide about 18 percent in the first quarter vs last year, with an overall heavy crop 10 percent down, likely lifting prices roughly five cents from last fall and 1954 levels. Larzelere says growers should maintain normal production to profit.

Wheel Track planting gains ground in Michigan
In Clare County and beyond the wheel track method of corn planting spreads as growers adopt minimal tillage. Originators James Howe and Andy Shugers of Van Buren County note the practice uses two row planters in plow furrows with wheels in the tracks. Michigan State specialist Leyton Nelson credits spread from Ohio to Iowa, while advantages include reduced cultivation, lower fuel use, less erosion, and stands as good or better than old tillage.
