The Ed Wichert Jr Memorial Trophy will honor Clare High School’s top baseball players. Fred Hagegart, hitting .417 this season, earns the right to have his name engraved on the trophy this year. Ed Wichert Jr died June 13, 1954 after a diving accident in the Tobacco River. The Memorial Award, a Student Council project, includes a medal for Haggart.

County supervisors in Harrison rejected all bids for the Clare county jail project as over the $135,000 bonding and tax limits. The plan had been set back twice by costly architect details from Cuthbert and Cuthbert of Ann Arbor, and earlier votes failed on November 1954 ballot.

A group of 35 Detroit newspaper men and their wives enjoyed a three day Know Michigan tour sponsored by the Automobile Club of Michigan. The Clare High School Pioneer baseball team lost two games last week to finish with a 3-6 season. Mt. Pleasant Oilers edged Clare 5-3 on May 18 at Clare, aided by a four-run inning against starter Pete Brown. Brown had two hits, Bill Siel allowed six hits in six innings, and coach Bob Baker cited fielding and clutch hitting as problems.
