Junior and senior students hosted guests including the Clare Board of Education and faculty at the Doherty Hotel in the Wedgewood Room. Superintendent Thomas Campbell was main speaker with Clark Kirsey giving the welcome and Don Squires delivering the senior reply. Kay Tice sang, a junior girls quartet performed, and Mt. Pleasant dancers entertained. Publicity was handled by Latrene Woodward.

Elementary hires include Mildred Roach from Harrison Willa Roe Bush from Traverse City Joan Bond from Grayling and Violet Kuahnau from Windom Minnesota. Katharine Van Gordon from Albion will teach vocational homemaking at the high school. An instructor in junior high social studies is tentatively filled awaiting certification.

Monroe G Dustin aged 74 died Sunday in a Pontiac Hospital from injuries from a Saturday auto accident in Waterford township. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2:00 PM at Thursday Funeral Home with burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Ruth Ritter Diesem, sister of Mrs Walter Broh, died Sunday at 7 PM after a critical hospital stay following transfer to Northville residence. Funeral held at Castorize Funeral Home Worthville.

Don Bay pitched a one sided 11 to 0 victory over the Shephard Blue Jays for the CHL Pioneer first conference win. Bay allowed two hits with six strikeouts and three walks while contributing a triple and three RBIs at the plate. Fred Haggart also drove in three runs as Clare dominated early then called the game after five innings. Coach Bob Baker cited timely breaks and improved hitting as key factors in the win.

Clare county health nurse Mrs. Catherine Freeman told the Clare PTA that Salk polio vaccine was unavailable this week. When Tri County health has more serum, first and second graders will receive the second shot, regardless of school sessions. Parents will be notified and children gathered to central points. First Communion for St. Cecilia Class of 27
On Sunday May 8 twenty seven children of St. Cecilia parish received First Holy Communion at the 1330 Mass. Fr J L Stuba gave a direct sermon to the communicants and Monday they again received communion and were presented with Scapular medals. Claré High School to Stage Spring Band Concert Friday
The 1955 Spring Concert of the Claré High School Band, directed by Lloyd Conley, features separate junior and elementary groups with a new sight-reading demonstration led by guest conductor Harold Kelley. Two Car Crash Near Stockyards Injures Clare Man
John Bruckart, 48, Clare, was seriously hurt in a head on collision on West US 10 near the stockyards Friday night May 13. Edward Walker, 30, Mt. Pleasant, fled to pass and collided with Bruckart in a 1965 Dodge. Walker and Ferris, 23, Mt. Pleasant, died later at Clare Hospital. Walker faces negligent homicide charges from a circuit court arraignment May 17.

Mt Pleasant man fined for DUI after traffic stop
Lewis Horvath of Mt. Pleasant paid 60 in fine and costs in Municipal Court on May 16 after State Police arrested him Sunday on a DUI charge. He was stopped on US 10 in Grant township for erratic driving and surrendered his license to Justice William B. Dunlop. Horvath's companion Harold Mogg of rural Rosebush also paid 15 in fine and costs on a disorderly conduct charge.

Central Michigan residents served by Consumers Power Company are invited to a three day open house at the new Central Division Service Center in Alma May 26 27 from 2 to 9 PM daily. H L Ziegenbein says exhibits tours door prizes and souvenirs will engage about 50 000 central division customers with guides present all three days. Carolyn Carter daughter of Robert and Carolyn Carter of Cornwell Ranch is a freshman at Michigan State College MSC. She was chosen for MSC Junior Livestock Judging team and led in beef cattle judging at the Regional Collegiate Livestock Judging contest at Purdee Indian s last Saturday with 60 contestants as the only female. The MSC team finished third with Carolyn the only individual on the five member squad to win a first while Ted Hoerach of Clare also contributed. Carolyn is 18 years old and a 1954 Clare High School graduate.

Local Men Join Navy After Clare High Graduation
Chris D. Smith and Thomas H. Van Hoose, both Clare residents and Clare High School graduates, have applied for and will enter the United States Navy after June graduation. They have been accepted for Construction Battalion Schools.
