The biology course engages both boys and girls with field trips into woods and fields, specimen collection, and in class reports. Alumni contributions enrich the collection and the study covers plants animals human anatomy and disease, with dissections and discussions on antibiotics vaccines and conservation.
May 8 to 14 marks National Hospital Week highlighting hospitals as community hubs. Clare General Hospital details improvements including remodeled operating and delivery rooms and new X ray gear. The Ladies Auxiliary has 25 members, with 60 local employees plus a 16 person staff drawn from a 30 mile radius.
John Mitchell chief scout of the Detroit Red Wings and Wilson assistant trainer will appear before the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Doherty Hotel on Monday May 16 at 8 00 p m. The event features film highlights of the 1956 Stanley Cup Playoffs and a round table discussion following the program.
Mt. Pleasant Oilers edged the CHL Pioneers 3-2 as errors doomed the hosts. Bill Siel held the Oilers to one earned run in a quality start and doubled as a Pioneer bat, while Pete Brown led a four-hit Pioneers offense despite the miscues. The Pioneers meet Bay City St. Stanislaus in tournament play Thursday.
A Grey Lady corps will be organized in Clare under the Womens Auxiliary of Clare General Hospital. R M Le Sage says the group hopes for Red Cross recognition. Helen Jones of the ARC will speak at an orientation class. Those interested may obtain applications at Clare General Hospital or contact Mrs R J Kranik at 132 F3 Farwell.
City police warn drivers to stop double parking on trunklines and main business streets to ease traffic jam risk. Tickets will be issued as heavy summer traffic returns.
Registration for all children born before December 1 is set for May 16 through May 20 in the elementary principal's office. Eligible pupils may start kindergarten in September 1955 after registration, with parental cooperation encouraged. Children may visit the classroom during enrollment, and supervising arrangements are available for accompanying siblings.
The Farwell Chamber of Commerce and Village Council plan May 16 events welcoming George Schafer of Allen Park Michigan. Duncan Koeplinger and Frank Coker will greet him, with a public lunch at a local restaurant and tours of farms, attractions, and the public schools as part of Michigan Week activities.
Clare County records a total of 1465.10 raised for the cancer campaign with seven communities contributing. Clare led with 961.26 followed by Harrison 414.84 Lake 49.00 and Farwell 40.00 as chairmen and volunteers express thanks to all donors and workers.
Theodore A. Pixley was elected president of the Clare Community Council at a May 9 meeting in City Hall. Charles Cooper presided as retiring president. Elithe Roe became vice president Ruby Jackson secretary and Ralph Cole treasurer. Next meeting is June 7 at City Hall with representatives from all organizations urged to attend.
A note to Mrs Harold Skinner praises her Brinton style news letter for the Sentinel staff. May 15 through 21 is Michigan Week inviting 7,000,000 Michiganders to pause and appreciate the state. It mentions a cold Sunday night but hardy lilacs and tulips remain undaunted.
The Gateway Lanes Ladies Friday night bowling league held its annual banquet at Twin Elms on May 7 with 69 attendees. Bowlerettes of Clare Manufacturing Co were 1954 55 champions. Rose Neft had a 549 three game series. Betty Thatcher had high game 239 and high average 152.
Graduation events span Clare Harrison Farwell and other districts with 227 diplomas. Eighth grade rural ceremonies May 18 in Clare High School auditorium feature speakers and music. Commencement will be outdoor if possible June 3 with 64 C H S grads and Dr. Bushong as speaker. Baccalaureate May 29 and May 22 in various venues.
Clare and surrounding communities observe Michigan Week May 15 to 21 with church services cited by attorney Robert Campbell and a city official exchange. Clare City Commission asks Lake City's mayor to serve as Clare's chief administrator for a day. Education Day is highlighted with open house at the school and Kraft Cheese Plant tours on Thursday drawing public interest.
Clare school's Junior and Beginning Bands present the first Annual Spring Concert tonight at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. A Myely program of fifteen numbers includes marches descriptive pieces cowboy songs and popular melodies. Rehearsals have polished the program and tickets are sold by band members or at the door.
World War I veterans are invited to join a new Bar racks group at Clare's VFW Hall. The meeting is set for 2 o'clock Sunday, announced by Charles Cooper, to organize, protect veterans' status and seek improved government aid.
Beginning Monday an enumeration team will visit homes to record household members for school planning and state aid. The census aims to track family movement to inform administrators and determine needs with a May 31 completion deadline.
Clare Public Schools host Michigan Week activities with map making, storytelling and displays across elementary to eighth grade. Students study Michigan symbols, industries, history and geography including the Mitten, Great Lakes, and state flora and fauna.
Tryouts for 8 to 10 year olds begin at 10 a.m. and 11 to 12 year olds at 2 p.m. on Saturday May 14 at Clare Public School playground. Boys from Clare area south to Weidman Road north to Cornwell Road west to Gut Lake Road east to Loomis Road may try out. Sponsors funding uniforms and equipment.
About 125 members from five districts gathered in Clare 1.0.0.F. Hall on May 5 for the Rebekah Association meeting. Guests came from Lansing St Louis Midland Ashley Bannister Ewart Baldwin Ionia as the host lodge listed officers were installed and district reports given.
The Clare PTA will meet Monday evening May 16 in the High School Multi-purpose room for the last meeting of the school year. A panel discussion by parents and teachers on "Reporting to Parents" will be featured, with a musical program by the High School chorus directed by Miss Nancy Keller.
Crawford ran the mile in 4 48 flat to set a new school and conference mark at the season opening Conference track meet in St Louis where St Louis won 88 to 82. Nard Robinette tied for first and set a school record with 5 ft 6% in. Chuck Ruby was runner up in the 220 and third in the 100.
Clare Police report a busy weekend with multiple incidents. Raymond A. Webster of Saginaw faces a driving under the influence charge after a head on collision near the Speedway 79 station on West US-10. Roger E. Mobley of Eivart was involved. Webster surrendered his license and paid a $60 fine. A wrecker incident damaged Brewer's Implement Store on Fourth Street. Richard J. McNerney of Mt. Pleasant received a reckless driving ticket for 40 mph in an 85 mph zone on North McEwan, pleading guilty and paying $35. Ruth K. Brant of Lake was fined $29 for reckless driving in Judge Dunlop's court. Josephine Smith of Sanford, involved in a separate West US-10 crash with Alvin W. Feldman of Saginaw, resulted in minor damage to both cars.
James A. Tatman a 17 year Hotel Doherty clerk died May 2 after months of illness. Born December 26, 1883 in Clare he worked in the grocery trade with his father and later in Owosso and Los Angeles. Funeral services were held May 4 at Thurston's Funeral Home. He survived by his wife a daughter Mrs Mary Elizabeth La Fatra and two grandchildren with sisters Miss Elva Tatman and Mrs Aline Andis and several nieces and nephews.
Three year old Larry Benchley of Marion died at Mercy Hospital Cadillac after being run over by a loaded stoneboat on the family farm. He was born November 27 1951 in Clare county. Survived by parents Connie and Joan, two sisters, and grandparents from Clare and Hope. Funeral services held May 9 at Fosnaught Funeral Home Marion with Elder H R Kehney officiating. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery.
