Jack Finch and John Blackledge of Farwell were in a Sunday night crash on US 10 east of town. Finch’s car went into the ditch after a curve, striking trees. Both teens were taken to Clare Hospital for treatment and released after first aid.
Farwell’s Women’s Society of Christian Service met at the Methodist Church on May 5 with 38 members. Mrs. Willis Gelston chaired the meeting and reports were read before a luncheon in the church hall. Local officers for 1955-56 were installed and district recognition was noted for detailed yearly reports.
Local residents shared weekend visits across Farwell and nearby towns including Clio Beaverton and West Branch. A car wreck on US 10 near Farwell killed a horse and injured passenger James Engwis.
The Farwell Senior Class left Monday morning for a tour of Michigan State University and the Capitol in Lansing. They then boarded a Greyhound bus to Chicago for visits before returning to Farwell Thursday staying at the Sherman Hotel.
Despite rain and cold Farwell Little League prepares for the first league game on Sunday May 22. A large turnout supports local teams and sponsors as organizers plan a meeting tonight at 7 30 pm at the school house to select leaders of the league.
Jr Shaw son of Mr and Mrs Dee Shaw of Harwell sustained a skull fracture in a Sunday afternoon automobile crash east of Willowbrook. He was transported by ambulance to Bay City hospital and operated on immediately after arrival.
A May events list shows a CES Card Party on May 12 at Beal City and May 13 events for Alice L Seeley OES. Hot lunch ends at school May 16. May 18 features C G M District OES Associations and Rebekah Lodges. May 19 includes Royal Arch Masonic Chapter events.
Attendees at the Rebekah District Association meeting in Clare on May 5 included Alice Shilling Viola Warner Ednd Laverty Mina DeForest Lillie Warner Ethel Thrush Hattie Butterfield and Alta Hulin Farwell Ledge earned a Certificate of Merit for a five percent membership increase in the last six months of the previous year The award was presented to Noble Grand Alice Shilling by Mrs Helen Hill president of Rebekah Assembly of Tonia.
On Thursday evening Main Street in Farwell showed a notable street cleaning effort. Workers included V. Finch F. Coker and son J. DuCharmé G. Agile P. Twig and son Davison G. Husson E. Hillard D. Lloyd D. Koeplinger B. Dawson H. Gilbert B. Schofield and May Gainsforth. The community complimented May for the accomplishment.
The Farwell O E S sponsor a card party on Thursday May 12 at the Farwell Masonic Hall. Proceeds support lodge activities and community events.
Mrs Genevieve Luce hosted dinner Saturday for Dean Luce's birthday. Choir practice led by Mr Dire on Thursday May 12 at 7 30 PM. Don Lie and G R Boga visited Lansing to watch Alan Luce play in a doubleheader between M C and Iowa. Mrs Gabe VanBuskirk received a birthday watch and ring from her children for Mother's Day. Mr and Mrs Art Kube visited Torch Lake and Mancelona, calling on Mr and Mrs Grant Melane and the Paul Kube family. Minnie Irwin is home from the hospital and improving. Frank Thrush hosted dinner with Leon Thrush and Sidney Thrush of Toledo. Ethel Thrush received Mother's Day wishes. Sunday visitors included Bill Rawson John Strand and family of Ann Arbor. later they toured Saginaw to see Mr and Mrs Williams Pemberton. Arie Renner and family and Kenneth Renner and family shared Sunday dinner with Jack Renner. Gene Cash and wife also visited Sunday evening.
