In Clare Public School the Basic Science column by Larry Wilcox explains biology and physical science courses for juniors and seniors. It highlights lab work, student projects, a chemistry unit with Dow Midland plant visit, and aims to foster scientific thinking for all students.
A regional meeting of Mayors Village and City Presidents CouncIlmen and officials from nine Michigan counties will be held in Clare on May 12 announced by John Huss director of the Michigan Municipal League The afternoon session and dinner precede the annual election of Region officers J Dean Stanley will discuss Bonding for Municipal Improvements and a general discussion will follow Officials from Arenac Bay Clare Clinton Gladwin Isabella Midland Saginaw and Shiawassee counties are invited with Mayor Albert Haley and Clare City Manager Willard Wedge hosting.
Vernetta Dunkle, 14, of Clare, won the Style Revue at Clare County 4-H Achievement Day in Harrison on April 27 with a print cotton dress. Lorene Hildebrand, 16, of Brush College, was runner up and named June event alternate, while Donna Sommers judged the 18 clubs’ 228 exhibits.
The Clare Study Club held its annual dinner at the Hotel Doher ty in the Wedgewood room on Monday evening May 2. Mrs. George Beck and Mrs. M. D. Feighner directed decorations while Mrs. Ben Bosink chaired the program. Don Biser’s one act play Special Guest starred Twila Beery and others, produced through Ron Peterson and Company, with Ivalee Foss as student director and Roger Brinkerhoff in lighting. New officers were introduced including Mrs. Lt Garthe as president and Mrs. Neil Stirling as vice president, marking the club’s last meeting until fall.
James A. Tatman, longtime Clare resident, died Monday after extended illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Itharge in Thurston's. Tatman formerly served as night clerk at the Doherty hotel and was widely known in Clare and surrounding areas.
Ten year old Harvey Walker of Clare learns to hear without ears through Clare Rotary’s Operation Hear Lift. He attends lip reading classes at Central Michigan College in Mt. Pleasant with Rotary transportation twice weekly. This summer he will live in Mt. Pleasant for six weeks of intensive lip reading and speech correction, funded by Clare Rotary’s special fund.
The Rosebush Community Council met at 8 pm to plan the annual homecoming for July 9 with a beef barbecue and local sports and contests. Jim Decker was named general chairman and a Memorial Service will be held on Memorial Day with Rev. Ronald Knapp as chairman. The next council meeting is May 12 at 8 pm in the Rosebush School. local groups are urged to send representatives.
A dinner meeting of the Region al Council of the Michigan Education Association was held at Farwell, April 28. The Program Planning Committee planned the Regional Institute. Clare school superintendent T. C. Compan and CHS art teacher William Harper served on committees. Mrs. Ivah Bartow was elected council delegate to the National Education Association convention in Chicago July 3-8. Willis Geston, Farwell superintendent, was elected legislative chairman for the coming year.
Rev and Mrs Oscar W Olson and children were honored at a Sunday farewell party at the Congregational church. A family pot luck supper followed at 6 30 with seventy five attending. Olson will preach a farewell sermon May 8 before moving to Norfolk Nebraska to pastor there. The event was sponsored by church women and men and the gift of an occasional chair was presented.
The Clare Main Street drug store marks fifty years of service this Saturday May 7 with free ice cream, gifts, prizes, and special advertising. Founding pharmacist E A Anderson built the business, later run by his daughter Jean Allen and now managed by E A Bud Anderson with recent storefront improvements.
The well baby conference for May 11 in Clare runs 1 to 3 p.m. at the Congregational Church basement. In Barwell the event is at the Methodist Church basement from 9 to 11 a.m. on May 11.
The Bay City Times recalls in its Thirty Years Ago column how Clare, Michigan got its name from Mrs. Bridget Bergen a Bay City resident born in County Clare Ireland She arrived in 1858 watched Center avenue become a swamp and was given the honor of naming Clare after her birthplace in Ireland The story notes her death at age 90 at her daughter’s Bay City home around 2 pm.
Mrs. William Kubat died at her Clare home on Sunday May 1 after several months illness. She was 44. Born Nancy Lucille Alberts in Marion September 24 1910 she married William Kubat on June 1 1935. She worked at Kroger Houghton and Andersons Drugstore. Survived by husband a son John E Cobb and several siblings. Funeral May 3 at St Cecilia's Church with Fr J I Sruba. burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
Final meeting of the Little League is set for Monday evening May 9 at 7 80 pm in the Clare school Auditorium. Officers will be elected and a project to prepare a playing field will be started. Volunteers will level and fence the land near the VFW Building in Clare's Tourist Park using a bulldozer. Men or boys willing to lend a hand may leave their names at J J Green store in Clare.
Mayor Albert Haley announced city and county appointments for the coming year at Monday night’s session. The planning committee includes Stuart Bicknell O D Bayes Harold Hughes Laurence Seiter and EK Bud Anderson. County Board members are Charles Cooper John Hall Albert Haley and Laurence Seiter. Board of review members are John Hall Alec McKinnon Jane Seiter and Albert Haley. Sidewalk and curb petition deadlines set for May 16. budget approved subject to May 16 public hearing. City Manager Willard Wedge named city assessor John Hall fire chief Stanley Parish and police chief Bert Head all reappointed. No health officer named.
Sharon Hulin of Lake receives valedictorian honors for Central Michigan College's 1956 graduating class. She holds a 2.93 GPA, edits the student newspaper, and served as yearbook editor. Commencement is June 12 at Central Michigan College. She earned a $1,600 Wisconsin fellowship for a journalism master's program and appears in Who's Who.
Clare girls Scouts and Brownies attended a potluck supper in City Hall marking the end of the school year. New officers were introduced for Troops 2 7 and 10 with badges pins and promises awarded. Ten year pin planned for Mrs Martha Lucy and Memorial Day parade participation discussed.
St Louis defeated CHS Pioneer baseball 8 5 in a conference clash. Clare’s fourth inning produced four runs on three hits, with Fred Haggart driving in two. Bill Siel pitched well, fanning seven, as Clare totaled six hits and left runners on base.
Mrs. Wesley Higgins of Farwell was injured in an April 29 automobile crash near Willowbrook while en route to Clare. Her truck veered off the road and overturned against a guard rail. she was hospitalized in Clare with a slight concussion and multiple bruises after an ambulance transfer.
Firestone relocated from 410 McMwan to a new site on West US 10 near the Livestock Auction Yard corner. The store offers John Deere implements Firestone tires and accessories plus sporting goods and appliances. Public invited to inspect the new building. phone 163 remains listed. Art Ulrich Pontiac, new owner of the old building on McMwan Street, prepares for an opening to be announced soon.
Clara High Senior Band traveled to Cadillac for the Third Annual Massed Band Festival with bands from Cadillac Frankfort Manistee and Undington. After a parade and massed band rehearsal a 8 00 pm concert was held in the new Cadillac gym.
The Clare city dump at the east end of First Street will close on Sundays and during night hours. Dumping will be permit only and within set hours, enforced by fences and gates on two access roads to the dump.
