Easter lily origins traced from Philadelphia to Japan
G B Stichter of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture notes the Easter lily originated in Philadelphia about 50 years ago from bulbs brought from Bermuda. A Philadelphia florist later refined forcing to bloom at Easter, and the modern lily, larger with sturdier foliage, was developed in Japan and returned to America. The piece also cites Brand’s Antiquities on bacon and eggs at Easter in England in the 16th century.
