Michigan farms shrink in number yet grow in size
Michigan agriculture is a 2.8 billion dollar sector alongside autos and tourism. The number of farms has fallen from 206,960 in 60 years to 85,000 today, while average farm size rose from 92 to 153 acres. Land under farm use covers 13 million acres, with urban encroachment pushing taxes higher and land values up as cities expand.
