Clare High aims to avoid loss of accreditation

Harrison man crafts furniture without power tools

Bert Douglas, 88, of Clare County, created an Early American Duncan Phyfe style dining set and more entirely by hand from oak on his farm. He worked from 1924 to 1966, aided only by hand tools, sawing and shaping logs from trees grown on his property. His wife Ethel recalls a lifetime of patient craftsmanship and a refusal to rely on a lathe.

Harrison Board weighs two way radio plan for buses

Harrison Board of Education considers equipping school buses with two way radios after two incidents of buses stranded on back roads in cold conditions. Superintendent Robert Larsen noted drivers and students must stay with the bus until help arrives. The board also commended a citizens committee and approved local levy renewals and a 2.9 million bond for new schools and PE facilities. Severe weather helped drive a near 47 percent turnout. Clare schools get a 2200 dollar appraisal contract to Midland Engineering for a full property and equipment appraisal, with updates to follow yearly. current insured value is about 3 million.

Clare Band Boosters to host dinner at United Methodist

Clare Band Boosters sponsor a dinner at the United Methodist Church in Clare Saturday from 4:30 to 7 pm. Tickets cost 2 for adults 1 for students and free for preschoolers. Proceeds fund new uniforms for the Clare bands as enrollment rises to about 220. Next week the Junior High and Intermediate bands perform a concert March 24 at 8 p.m. in the high school gym with Suite From Bohemia by Vaclav Neshybel highlighted.

New Sentinel appoints David A. Rood editor and GM

David A. Rood named editor and general manager of the Clare Sentinel effective Monday. He has a decade at Manistique Pioneer-Tribune and prior stints at Galien River Gazette and other Michigan papers. Rood is MSU journalism graduate, WWII veteran, and holds multiple press awards and organization roles. His family plans to move to Clare in June as spring arrives amid heavy snowfall and local school disruptions.
