Starved Deer Persist Through Harsh Michigan Winter
Snow and cold kept Michigan deer at risk with rising starvation losses across the state. Upper Peninsula deer were confined to yards and forest cuts, while whitetails in the northern lower peninsula faced heavy cover restrictions. Deer have been yarded for 74 days in Kalkaska and 60 days elsewhere in the Traverse City district, with fawns and weakened deer reported in Baraga and Crystal Falls areas. Two dogs killed a deer in the Baldwin district as six inches of new snow pushed depths to three feet in parts of the UP.
