Girl Scouts Hostess To Farwell Group At Potluck

The Clare Girl Scouts hosted about 100 girls and mothers from Clare and Farwell at a potluck supper in Clare City Hall. After a short business meeting led by Mrs. Betty Marotzke, Farwell leader Miss Ruth Smith introduced the visiting scouts, with a fashion parade of dolls and group singing. The next potluck is set for April 2 with Troop 7 in charge of kitchen and Brownie Troop 1 presenting the program.

A close bolt struck the Carl Athey residence on R-2 Clare during Tuesday night’s storm, shattering a large front window and burning out most light bulbs. No injuries were reported as the Atheys and their children moved to the Hutchinsons’ home for the night after the damage occurred shortly after 8 p.m.

Church School Institute All Day Meeting Planned Here

An interdenominational Vacation Church School Institute will be held in Clare on April 11 1956 under the Educational Divisions of the Clare Congregational and Methodist Churches in cooperation with the Michigan Council of Churches. Clergy from Clare Isabella Gladwin Midland and Osceola counties will attend with five experienced leaders guiding workshops in kindergarten primary junior junior high and administration. Registration opens at 9 45 with a 1 50 fee per person or 5 00 per church.

Clare Study Club Panel on Community Service

The Clare Study Club met Tuesday evening at the Methodist church parlors for its March meeting. Moderator Mrs Seton Van Hvery led a discussion with Mrs Clayton Neff and Mrs Robert Gravelle on the clubs service to the community and individual, noting founding of the City Library and city garbage collection, plus annual after Seals projects and wheel chair loans. Missy Garthe chaired the business session and an invitation from Evart Club was read for March 19. Tea committee members served as listed and St Patrick s day decorations framed the event.

Glass School Annexation Vote Plans Unveiled

The Glass school district asks voters to decide annexation with Farwell on the election ballot. A second question seeks approval to sell the Glass building to the Gilmore Variety Club for use as a community center. Polls open March 9 from noon to eight.

Floods Drain Red Cross Treasury

The costliest half year of disasters in Red Cross history including floods on both coasts has drained the relief fund. A Michigan Red Cross executive warns the spring tornado and flood season must be planned for and urges urgent fundraising. Clare county met its United Fund quota, and county citizens are asked to donate another $240 to ensure aid for future victims.

Farwell eighth graders tour Sentinel building and note upside down names

The entire Farwell Public School eighth grade visited the Sentinel on Monday, took notes, and observed the effect of their names spelled upside down on lino slugs. Dolls were featured at a Girl Scout program with a fashion parade. Grandparents Mr and Mrs Gerald Brown welcomed two new grandsons born recently. Norman Hutchinson reports a robin sighting in Hagle.
