Twelve Clare high school seniors were named to the National Honor Society for 1956. The group includes Beverly Thayer Meg Seiter Phyllis Bolin Jan Schaeffer Wilma Brewer Lucille Becker Louise Miller Charles Ruby Darylene Schunk Francis Northon Margie Wood and Laurence Woodward. Clare High draws Remus in district tournament

Clare High School’s varsity basketball team drew Remus as their first opponent in the Mt. Pleasant District Class C tournament. The game is set for Thursday March to be played at 7 15 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant.

Gene Campbell Jr Installed As DeMolay Master Councilor

County 4-H to Publish New Plat Book for Clare County

The Clare County 4 H Leaders Parents Association plans a new plat book after about 18 years. Advertising space is needed to cover printing costs with 1000 copies contracted. Committee members Floren Pudway J C Marotzke and Marion Magnus solicit ads from landowners business people and investors urging cooperation with the 4 H Club to fulfill demand.

Robbers Enter The Autry Store

Robbers broke the front door of the Autry Western Auto store Friday night and stole fifty dollars from the cash register and a specially mounted gun from a display rack. A window strip was broken and replaced, says proprietress Mrs. Guy Autry.

Clare Fire Chief Stan Parish reports 1955 fire losses totaling 4 295 in Clare city and 55 650 in surrounding rural areas. Fined For Reckless Driving in Rosebush Court

Robert J. Bender of Rosebush was fined 75 dollars in Municipal Court on February 27 after pleading guilty to reckless driving. Police reported excessive speed caused his car to leave West Fifth Street, strike poles near Maple Street, and cross Fifth Street. Donald Winkler waived examination in Justice Court on larceny by conversion and was bound over to circuit court. He was arrested by state police at his home early Wednesday.

Penrose Holstein Completes Dairy Production Record

Howard Penrose and Sons of Clare receive notice from The Holstein-Friesian Association of America of Clare's Holstein cow Clarise Echo completing an official production record. The eight year old cow produced 19,694 pounds of milk and 574 pounds of butterfat with an average of 25 quarts daily during a 365 day two milkings per day test supervised by Michigan State University.

Trucks in Mishaps at Lake Cause Gas Spill and Damage

Wayne Scott lost control of his gas truck on the ice west of Lake Friday. The vehicle rolled, Scott escaped with a scraped knee, but about 2800 gallons of gas spilled and extensive damage occurred to the truck. The prior day Robert Laribee’s milk truck collided while avoiding an oil truck, injuring no one but causing about 360 dollars in truck damage to Fred Sowle’s vehicle.

Karolyn Amble Honored Snow Queen At Harrison Event

Karolyn Amble, Michigan Snow Queen winner, was feted by Harrison Chamber of Commerce with a day of winter sports and festivities. She supervised skating and distance races for children, awarded prizes, and received rhinestone jewelry. A clown chase, public skating, and 1,000 hotdogs followed. She later attended a Regional Speed Skaters meet in Midland as part of her royal duties.

Clare Band Wears New Uniforms at Oscoda Festival

The Clare Band performed at Oscoda Michigan for the Ninth District Band and Orchestra Festival, earning a third divisional rating in class C. They showcased new uniforms bought this winter, with judges Norman Dietz Paul Haréer and Edgar Ross present for the concerts. New Owner For Clare Golf Club

The Twin Elms Country Club has been sold to Mr and Mrs Chris Demo of Pontiac. Final transfer details are being arranged and the Demos aim to reopen on April 1. They plan golf course improvements and to build a residence on the property, renting meanwhile through Roy Dunbar Real Estate.

Plan Rosebush Community Building Proposal Discussed

Rosebush Community Council met at Rosebush School to discuss a new community building. A committee was appointed to estimate costs for a quonset or cement block building and to locate a site near the school. A special meeting was set for March 5 to hear committee reports. No action was taken.

Pilgrim Fellowship Organizes at Clare Congregational Church

The newly formed junior high Pilgrim Fellowship at the Clare Congregational Church held its first meeting at the parsonage Sunday. Officers elected include President Karla Cooper and Co president John Kegg with Joy Groves as Secretary and Ann Elden as Treasurer. Meetings planned Sundays from 7 to 9 p.m. Allan Tulk and Hugh Kennedy serve as group advisors.

Teachers Attend Reading Conference at Kellogg Center

Mrs J C Garthe representing lower elementary grades and Miss Violet Kulman of Clark Public School attended a four day Michigan reading conference at Kellogg Center Fast Landing on Tuesday and Wednesday. About 800 educators gathered to discuss reading and Dr Clair L Taylor the state superintendent said the conference failed due to widespread discussion of teaching methods.

Clare Baptist to Expand Radio Broadcast Time on WCEN

Beginning Sunday morning March 4 Clare Baptist Church will air a 30 minute gospel message at 11 30 over WCEN. The program led by Rev. Gerit Schut will expand to two half hour periods each Sunday as the Melody and Meditation feature continues to attract listeners across central and western Michigan. Talent from the McBain congregation assists, with favorable response already noted.
